Ryan's interest in languages began while spending an initial year abroad at the University of Barcelona. It quickly turned into three years of undergraduate work in Hispanic and Romance Linguistics. After graduating from the University of Minnesota in the late 90's, Ryan spent a year teaching English Linguistics at China University of Techonology in Xuzhou, China.

He began his graduate study at the University of Minnesota in Hispanic Linguistics, during which time he spent 18 more months in Barcelona researching and studying Catalan Sociolinguistics and beginning work on the first-ever English-Aranese (Occitan) Dictionary.

Before arriving at Gustavus, Ryan was a Visiting Instructor of Spanish at St. Olaf College, while continuing to pursue his PhD in Hispanic Linguistics at the University of Minnesota.
