Welcome from the President

Welcome to the Faith and Learning website. The site is designed to help prospective students, alumni and friends understand and appreciate the church-related nature of the College.

Gustavus is a community with a Christian tradition and a Lutheran identity. The Lutheran understanding of education brings positive value in the all-important exploration of the world and its diverse people. Gustavus welcomes and respects all persons who choose a Gustavus education.

The College encourages faith exploration by students and staff. We affirm the conviction that faith informs learning and learning informs faith. Curriculum aspects that address religion and faith are not aimed at conversion, but rather understanding.

Voluntary daily chapel provides opportunity for praise, prayer and listening to diverse campus voices as they address a variety of topics, including personal faith journeys. Many fellowship groups assist students as they grow in faith.

Faith is further expressed as all students join together in "service to the neighbor" and in pursuit of the common good.

The goal of this site is to bring the reader an appreciation of how this church-related school lives out its mission of educating students for fulfilling lives of leadership and service in a way that benefits all who come here. Welcome.

Jim Peterson,
President

Tornado Aftermath

On March 29, 1998, a mile-wide tornado devastated the Gustavus campus. Students were on break at the time and no one was hurt, but the tornado caused $50 million in damage, broke 80% of the windows on campus, and destroyed 90% of the trees. Despite the damage, the college was re-opened just 23 days after the devastating event.
