Association of Congregations Scholarship

Gustavus Adolphus College was founded in 1862 to educate the sons and daughters of Lutheran immigrants and to train pastors and teachers for service to the Swedish immigrant population in Minnesota. The College has since expanded to provide education in the liberal arts and sciences to students from over forty states and twenty foreign countries. The concept of higher education within a spiritual context has grown through the years and continues today in the College’s strong relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.

Gustavus is supported by the Association of Congregations in the ongoing development of the College. Representatives of the Association meet annually to elect members to the Board of Trustees. In recognition of the valuable work done by the parishes of the Association and their support of Lutheran higher education, Gustavus established the Association of Congregations Scholarship. These renewable scholarships, ranging in valued from $250 to $1,000, are available to students who are members in good standing of an Association congregation.

Awards are made on the basis of financial eligibility as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, academic qualifications, and church involvement. Students applying for the Association of Congregations Scholarship must be applicants for admission to Gustavus, submit a scholarship application (available from the Office of Church Relations), and provide a recommendation from the pastor (form included in application).

Priority deadline for this scholarship is March 1.

Gustavus Adolphus College has a long tradition of providing excellence in education rooted in the context of our Christian heritage and faith.

A major objective of Gustavus Adolphus College is to remain financially accessible to the young people who are members of congregations. To that end, and in addition to other need-based financial aid packages, Gustavus has a program that will match scholarships awarded by congregations. The College will match congregational scholarships on a one to one basis up to $1,000.

The priority deadline for submitting forms is March 15. Forms received after September 1 will be matched only for the spring semester. Payment should be sent to the Office of Student Financial Assistance by September 1.
