A "Framework Plan for Future Development of the Campus," adopted by the Gustavus Board of Trustees, calls for the removal of the football stadium from its current site to allow for the completion of a "west mall" for new campus academic and residential life buildings.
These plans allow for a new football field and stadium, baseball field, and expanded classrooms and fitness facilities in Lund Center. At its meeting in June 2006, the board gave the go-ahead to proceed with construction of a new football stadium.
The new football field and stadium will be built in the space west of Lund Center previously occupied by the College's baseball diamond and football practice field. During the past summer, Myrum Field, the College's baseball field, was relocated to the northwest corner of the campus, between Linnaeus Arboretum's northern reach and the Swanson Tennis Center. Ground preparation has begun for the football facility. Barring unforeseen construction delays, the varsity baseball team will play on its new home field starting in the spring of 2007, and the Golden Gustie football team will play the inaugural game at the College's new stadium in the fall of 2007.
Additional support for the project is welcome and needed. Contact the College's Office of Institutional Advancement at 800/726-6192, or e-mail giftplanning@gustavus.edu for more information.
"The truth about football is the same today as when the game was first played more than 100 years ago. Football is a game of heart."—Richard Elvee, former college chaplain
The Gustavus women's soccer team battled the Macalester Scots to a scoreless tie through 89 minutes, but the Scots' Emily Humphries scored her first collegiate goal with 40 seconds left in regulation play handing the Gusties a heartbreaking 1-0 loss. The Gusties fall to 6-5-2 overall and 2-4-1, while Macalester improves to 9-3-2 overall and 4-2-1 in the MIAC.
The Gustavus men's golf team wrapped up its fall season with an 11th place finish at its own 20-team Twin Cities Classic. The tournament was scheduled to begin on Saturday, however cold and snow canceled the first round. On Sunday, an 18-hole round was played at the Links at Northfork in Ramsey, Minn., but the snow forecast for Monday forced the cancellation of the final round and Saint John's who fired a team score of 289 was declared the winner. Gustavus posted a total of 302.
