What is Convivium?

Convivium is the concoction of three philosophers--Glenn Kuehn of Mississippi State University, Ray Boisvert of Siena College and Lisa Heldke of Gustavus Adolphus College--who noticed that we were all doing work on philosophy of food at meetings of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy (SAAP). Three people, we decided, already made us an organization--all we needed was a name.

Food and the practices associated with it reveal much about our self-understanding. Philosophy, having come to take seriously the embodied condition of humans, can benefit from reflection on an important accompaniment of embodiedness. Convivium seeks to meet the challenge. Our group welcomes participants from all philosophical schools and traditions. There is only onecriterion: an interest in fostering research and dialogue on the intersection of food and philosophy. The professional aims, goals and projects of this group are open-ended. We plan to have annual sessions at the Central APA, as well as other events throughout the year. We wish to serve as a forum for discussions about this all-too-common aspect of our lives that is all-too-uncommonly discussed in philosophy.
