March
7, 1998
- Glenn Kuehn presented a paper entitled, "Microwaves,
Bread Machines, and the Technology of Disembodied Cooking" at
the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy Conference in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin. The commentary was by Lisa Heldke (co-editor with Deane Curtin,
of "Cooking, Eating, Thinking: Transformative Philosophies
of Food").
- After a short discussion, Lisa and Glenn began thinking
forming a new philosophy society about food.
August
10-16, 1998
- Glenn and Lisa meet again at the World Congress of Philosophy
in Boston, Massachussettes and after soliciting the help of Ray Boisvert,
the philosophy and food society began to develop.
February
27, 1999
- Convivum held its first sponsored session at the Socity
for the Advancement of American Philosophy Conference in Eugene, Oregon. The
session was entitled, "Why Should Philosophers
Think About Food, and What Happens When We Do?," and the participants
were the three founders of Convivium, Ray Boisvert ("Homo Sapiens/Homo
Ritualis: What Happens When Philosophers Think About Food"), Lisa Heldke
("The Curry Files"), and Glenn Kuehn ("The Treasure of Thanksgiving:
Aesthetic Spirituality in the Growing Community Puzzle")

3, 1999
- Representing Convivium, Glenn Kuehn gave an invited paper
at Vanderbilt entitled, "Cooking, Eating: Aesthetic
Education Through 'Virtual' Culture"

21, 2000
- Our second sponsored session took place at the Central
Division meeting of the APA at the Palmer House in Chicago, Illinois. Carolyn
Korsmeyer (author of the new book, MAKING
SENSE OF TASTE: FOOD AND PHILOSOPHY) of SUNY Buffalo, was
the featured speaker and
the commentary was by Ann Clark of St. Mary's College. Our
session was chaired by Ray Boisvert. Dr. Korsmeyer's paper was entitled,
"Delightful, Delicious, Disgusting: Eating Sublime
and Terrible"
