Alcohol and Tobacco Use

Use of Tobacco Products and/or Alcoholic Beverages: The college's policies regarding the use of tobacco products and alcoholic beverages are consistent with state and local laws; officials support and enforce all laws restricting use. All public facilities at Gustavus, including residence hall corridors and rooms, are designated "tobacco-free" as specified by Minnesota's Clean Air Act. Smoking is prohibited in all residence halls, including student rooms.

Please review the residence hall descriptions in the Residence Hall Handbook, then rank your hall preferences. Please note that while the Residential Life office will attempt to honor requests, it cannot guarantee that it will be able to place all students in the hall of their choice.

Terms and Conditions

Students and Parents: Please read this document and the terms and conditions of the Gustavus Adolphus College Housing Contract and Handbook carefully. When submitted, this document becomes a legal and binding contract and governs the conditions under which the college agrees to provide a space in the campus residential unit for the student who is party to this agreement.

Effective Period of the Contract: This contract is binding for the full academic year unless the student is involved in a college-sponsored internship, study abroad, or student teaching program. It will become effective when signed by all parties, when payment or other acceptable arrangements have been made for all deposits and fees due as of that time, and when the student is placed in a space in one of the college's residential facilities. The contract will be in effect until 24 hours after the student's final examination in spring semester or 6:00 PM the last day of final examinations whichever is earlier. Those involved in commencement either as a graduating senior or other approved commencement participant may stay until 6:00 PM the day of commencement.

Interim: A student who is enrolled for both fall and spring semesters will automatically retain his or her campus space during January, regardless of whether or not s/he plans to be away from campus for the month. However, the student may not occupy campus housing during the month unless enrolled in an approved interim course, music/sports program or is approved for campus employment or academic research.

Termination of Contract: Any student with a signed contract will be expected to fulfill the contract unless it is terminated as specified in the Housing Contract and Handbook and in the rules and regulations adopted pursuant to the contract.

Exceptions to Living on Campus: The college reserves the right to limit off-campus housing approvals. A student who is eligible to reside off-campus according to the Occupancy Guidelines of the Housing Contract and Handbook, and desires to terminate his or her contract prior to the beginning of the contract period must request to do so through the Residential Life office according to the following timetable: Fall semester or Fall, Interim and spring contracts: August 15th, prior to fall semester; interim or interim and spring contracts: December 15th; spring semester contracts: January 15th.

Students requesting off-campus permission must select one of the following as rationale for permission: (1) Junior or senior standing and 21 years of age; (2) Exemption request: (a) Married; (b) living with and responsible for dependent children; (c) living at home with parents/legal guardians in the St. Peter area or (d) sole ownership, or co-ownership with parent or sibling, of home within the St. Peter area and able to provide a copy of mortgage and deed information to the Residential Life office.

Rules and Regulations: The director of Residential Life may promulgate rules and regulations concerning conduct in the residence halls for the safety and convenience of the residents as a whole and to clarify procedures for administration of the residence halls. By agreeing to this contract, the student agrees to comply with all such rules and regulations. It is further understood and agreed that a copy of the Gustavus Adolphus College Housing Contract and Handbook has been made available to all parties to this contract, and that the Housing Contract and Handbook is hereby incorporated in and made part of this contract as though fully set forth herein. Compliance with this agreement requires compliance with all provisions of the Housing Contract and Handbook. Submission of this form indicates that the student has read, understood and agreed to comply with all the provisions included in this contract.
