Dublin ArrivalExplore Irish and Celtic culture and learn about the social, economic and political history of the breathtaking ‘Emerald Isle’ with Gustavus Adolphus Professor Emeritus of History, Dr. Kevin Byrne. This 13-day alumni study tour combines learning, exploring, lecture, local cuisine, and more with special touches by a faculty expert. 

Glendalough and KilkennyThe journey begins in the Irish capital of Dublin to explore this fascinating city and learn why Dublin is at the heart of Ireland’s history. Visit Newgrange Neolithic Tomb which is older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid. Experience the stunning beauty of the Wicklow Mountains and explore early Christian Ireland at Glendalough. Learn about Ireland’s history of resistance, rebellions and revolution while visiting the historic Kilkenny Castle and Rock of Cashel. Continue through the picturesque countryside of County Kerry to the hauntingly beautiful Dingle Peninsula and the Aran Islands where the traditional Irish language of Gaelic is still spoken by the locals along with English. Take in the rugged beauty of the famous Cliffs of Moher and learn about the history of Irish emigration. Explore the historic town center of Galway City and learn about “Making all things Irish.” This educational and enriching travel program returns from Shannon airport.

Program Leader

Dr. Kevin ByrneKevin Byrne taught at Gustavus Adolphus College for 40 years and is currently Professor Emeritus of History. With deep ancestral roots in Ireland and having visited the island on several occasions, Kevin subsequently offered numerous courses on Irish History during his teaching career. Three of his January Term classes traveled to Ireland to explore its past and present. Having instituted a linkage between Gustavus and University College Cork, moreover, he led in-country orientations for Gustavus students multiple times. Kevin is excited to share his fervor for Ireland’s landscape and people, and he invites you to witness first-hand the forces that shaped this ancient, mystical culture which has evolved into a complex 21st century society.
