Gustavus Adolphus College Listed
a New Safety School for College Admission

ST. PETER, Minn. (April 11, 2001) – Gustavus Adolphus College was included in a recent Wall Street Journal feature on "College Admissions: The New Safety Schools."  The March 30 Weekend Journal section lead article listed 50 colleges and universities that top students are currently scrambling to get into as backups to Ivy League and other super-selective institutions.  As competition for admission to the most prestigious institutions has increased, some quality colleges and universities traditionally considered "safety-net" schools have become equally as competitive.

High school guidance counselors and college experts assembled by the Journal identified a new group of safety-net schools that are growing in reputation but may not yet be widely known.  The Dow Jones Safety School Index chart was arranged in four categories, ranging from the "New Ivies" to the “Safest” fallbacks.

Gustavus was one of 11 schools listed among the "safest" schools for high-achieving students to get into. Only a few Midwestern schools and only one other Minnesota college were included in the chart. (St. Olaf College in Northfield was also in the "safest" category.)  The article was written by Elizabeth Bernstein.

Gustavus Adolphus College is a residential, liberal arts college overlooking St. Peter and the Minnesota River Valley. Founded by Swedish Lutheran immigrants and named for Swedish King Gustav II Adolf, Gustavus is fully accredited and well known for its strong writing, science, music, athletic, and service-learning programs, Gustavus hosts a local chapter of Phi Beta Kappa and is internationally recognized for its annual Nobel Conference.
