Joint conference with faculty from Tumaini University - CALL FOR PAPERS
Wednesday, October 4, 2006 (Around 7 years ago)
The ELCA Vocation and Education unit announces the second symposium of Partners for Educational Progress: An alliance between the colleges, universities and seminaries of the ELCA and Tumaini University of the ELCT in Tanzania.
The symposium will take place at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois from April 20 — 27, 2007. The topic is: “Globalization and Social Responsibility: The Role of the Lutheran University.” We are planning a week-long seminar, including field trips to the Chicago region, a public forum, and class presentations by the participants. We anticipate that eight faculty members from Tanzania and sixteen faculty members from different Lutheran colleges, universities, and seminaries in the United States will be selected as participants.
The purpose of the symposium is to bring together faculty from the two cultures that are interested in continuing collaboration on joint research projects and in development of curricular materials. Participants in the symposium are expected to contribute an original research paper that addresses the theme of the symposium. Abstracts for proposed papers will be reviewed; upon acceptance, participants are requested to develop a 5-10,000 word paper for the symposium.
The United Nations Eight Millennium Development Goals offer points of reference for consideration in development of research topics: eradication of poverty and hunger, education, gender equality, reduced child mortality, combating HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases and ensuring environmental sustainability. Anticipating research representing many disciplines and international in scope, this symposium will not only enhance a shared sense of the world’s interconnectedness and interdependency but also demonstrate the intersection of research, curriculum and civic responsibility for faith related institutions.
The institutions where the American participants teach will be expected to contribute $500 toward the travel costs of participants. Thanks to a generous grant from the Siebert Lutheran Foundation, all other expenses will be covered by the organizers of the symposium.
Faculty interested in submitting an abstract may do so electronically to the program director, Dr. Shoonie Hartwig, at email@example.com. The abstract should be in her hands no later than December 10, 2006 accompanied by a letter of support from your academic dean/provost and a brief resume. Selection of participants will be announced in early January.
