German Placement

Thank you for your interest in studying German at Gustavus. Please read the instructions below to guide you in registering for the German course most appropriate for you. Instructions for taking the German Placement Exam follow if you should need to take it.

Students who have not taken German classes at the high school level:

Current students: If you have no high school experience with German, please verify your eligibility for the beginning level course at the Registrar’s office to register for German 101.

Incoming new students: If you have not taken German in high school, you can verify your eligibility for the beginning level course with the Registrar at your summer registration appointment or in your telephone registration interview to register for German 101.

Students who have studied German at the high school level:

Current students: If you have taken German classes in high school, you must take the online German Placement Exam (see instructions below) to determine the best course placement for you. If you have questions or concerns about the results of your online placement exam, please contact the current German instructor.

Incoming new students: If you have taken German classes in high school, you should take the online German Placement Exam prior to your registration appointment to determine the best course placement for you (see instructions below). If you have questions or concerns about the results of your online placement exam, you can talk with a representative of the Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures when you are on campus, or email the current German instructor.

German Placement Exam

Please keep the following in mind as you prepare to take the On-line German Placement Exam:

  • The language placement test can only be taken ONCE for the same language.
  • You must do the exam by yourself and must not use a dictionary, a friend, or any other form of help.
  • You may complete the exam from any computer that has Internet access.
  • Plan well so you are able to complete it without interruptions. You may not log out and return at a later time to finish.
  • You will not know all the answers since the exam covers all language levels. Simply answer the questions to the best of your knowledge.
  • It will be scored immediately and will let you know what course to register for.
  • Send a copy of the results to your email and archive it in a save folder for reference during your college career.
  • Contact Jenny Tollefson if you experience technical difficulties and are unable to complete the exam. She can also answer questions about computer access, the exam, and exam results.
  • The placement exam is only for placing/entering into language courses. If you are looking into testing out of the language requirement, please refer to the Equivalency Exam page.

Take the German Placement Exam -- Follow These Instructions


  1. Open your web browser and click on this link, and follow the instructions to create an account.
  2. Once logged in, give yourself approximately 15-30 minutes to complete the exam.
  3. After completing the exam, you will receive immediate results. Use this information to register for the appropriate level.
  4. If you ever need to refer back to your results you can login to the test site again with the username and password you created.
