Math/Computer Science Department News
- June 7-8, 2004: Wayne Roberts of Macalester College, pictured

The departmental retreat was organized by Mike
Hvidsten, pictured behind Roberts. Roberts was also
given a spare brain
in thanks for his service to the department.
- June 1, 2004: Max Hailperin takes over as supreme chairbeing in a
bloodless coup. Deposed former chairbeing Jeff Rosoff
goes into well deserved exile for a year. The photo
shows Rosoff smiling as he passes the Cymbal of Power
to Hailperin. Hailperin is already wielding the
Mallet of Persuasion, but not smiling.
- March 11, 2003: The department is pleased to announce that Dr. San
Skulrattanakulchai will be joining us as Assistant Professor of Computer
Science, starting in September, 2003. Dr. Skulrattanakulchai was a
student of Harold Gabow at Colorado, and has published extensively on
algorithmic problems related to graph coloring. As a graduate
student, he also received recognition as a gifted teacher.
Prior to his
PhD in computer science, he practiced as an MD in his native Thailand.
- October-November 2002: Steve Smale is
at Gustavus as the Rydell
Nobel Conference Distinguished Professor.
- October 23, 2002: The faculty approves changes in the computer
science curriculum.
- September, 2002: Gustavus receives a $391,812 grant from the
National Science Foundation, over a four year period, to help
attract and retain financially needy students majoring in mathematics
or computer science. The program, directed
by Max Hailperin, will pay for scholarships and
student support activities. Partial support for this
work was provided by the National Science Foundation's
Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics
Scholarships Program under grant DUE-0220541.
