Resources for Russian Studies

Russian Studies familiarizes students with the language, literature, culture, civilization, history and economics of Russia and other eastern European nations. This guide points out some of the resources available in this field. It is not complete; please don't hesitate to ask a librarian for help if you are not finding what you need.

    Full-text backfiles to over 350 scholarly journals from more than 25 academic disciplines published between the 19th and 21st centuries in the JSTOR Arts & Sciences I, Arts & Sciences II, and Language & Literature collections. JSTOR provides complete journal backruns from the date of initial publication up to a "moving wall" of 3 to 5 years before the present year. To limit your search to full text articles, make sure that the option to "include links to external content" is turned off.

    The major research resource for information on English literature, foreign languages and linguistics. Includes references to scholarly articles, books, book chapters, book reviews, and dissertations; coverage dates back to the 1920's.
  • Project MUSE

    Project MUSE provides full text electronic access to over 100 scholarly journals in humanities, the social sciences, and mathematics. Topics covered include literary theory; classics; history and cultural studies; philosophy; film, theatre and the performing arts; political science and mathematics.

      Translations of words from Russian to English and from English to Russian.

      Useful for determining the meaning of words since the root usually contains the main meaning of the word.

    • Etymological Dictionary of the Russian Language
      Each entry describes the origin and historical development of language material. The entries reveal the influences on the linguistic development of Russian which come from Slavic languages and a variety of other languages.

      A four-volume Russian dictionary.

    • Encyclopedia of Russian History
      Offers succinct but scholarly articles on events, cultural developments, ethnic groups, economic issues, organizations, prominent historical figures, and issues in Russian history.

    • Eastern Europe, Russia and Central Asia 2002
      Each country entry contains geographical information, a historical chronology, essays on politics and the economy, a statistical survey and a directory containing names and addresses of organizations and people associated with a variety of areas from government to education. Countries covered are Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and the Ukraine.

    • The Cambridge Encyclopedia of Russia and the Former Soviet Union
      Arranged according to topic, this encyclopedia provides information on the geography, people. religion, history, art and architecture, language and literature, cultural life, sciences, politics, economy, society, military and international relations of Russia. Although somewhat dated, most of the information is still relevant.

      Biographies of twentieth century Russian authors.

    • Reference Guide to Russian Literature
      A guide containing biographical sketches of 273 major Russian writers. Each entry also highlights the author's major works and includes a bibliography of the author's works and a bibliography of critical studies.

    • Encyclopedia of Russian and Slavic Myth and Legend
      This resource covers the common characters, myths, legends and themes in Russia and the Slavic countries.

    • Dictionary of Russian Women Writers
      Covers 448 women writers who in most cases have been neglected in other works. Each entry includes biographical and critical information, a list of publications, and a bibliography of critical sources, most of which are in Russian language publications.

    • Handbook of Russian Literature
      Covers Russian writers, critics, topics such as "folk song," and literary movements. Each essay is concise, and is followed by a bibliography of works in Russian editions, in English translation, and selected secondary sources.
