Finding Books
You should use the catalog to find books on your topic within this library's collection. If you are not finding enough resources in our library, you should search WorldCat for books owned at other institutions. Please note that you'll be more likely to get any given book if that book exists in a number of libraries. If there are only a couple copies, I recommend you look for something else.
  • MnPALS Plus

    The online catalog to the library at Gustavus Adolphus College. Choose "All Libraries" in the search options to search other MnPALS libraries (such as Minnesota State schools) and request books through Interlibrary Loan. View our MnPALS Plus tutorial.
  • WorldCat

    Includes over 40 million bibliographic records representing cataloged resources in 400 languages owned by libraries around the world. Materials date back to the 11th century. Owning libraries can be identified for books, journals, archival resources and electronic resources. Finding Articles
Search for articles in any of these databases. If the full text is not available through the database, click on the yellow FindIt! button. The FindIt! button will search all other databases and our print copies to see if we have access to the article. An SFX screen will pop up, directing you to full text options. If you see an option for ILL, it means we will have to request the article from another library. Click the Go button next to the ILL option to be taken directly to the ILL form.

    The world's largest academic multi-disciplinary database, Academic Search Premier indexes nearly 8,050 publications and provides full text for nearly 4,600, including more than 3,500 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage also includes many newspapers and popular magazines and spans virtually every area of academic study since 1975. Updated daily. Access is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM). View our Academic Search Premier tutorial.

    Full-text backfiles to over 350 scholarly journals from more than 25 academic disciplines published between the 19th and 21st centuries in the JSTOR Arts & Sciences I, Arts & Sciences II, and Language & Literature collections. JSTOR provides complete journal backruns from the date of initial publication up to a "moving wall" of 3 to 5 years before the present year. To limit your search to full text articles, make sure that the option to "include links to external content" is turned off.

    Indexes literature related to the history of the United States and Canada from prehistorical times to the present. This extensive database covers over 2,000 journals published worldwide including all key English-language historical journals, selected historical journals from major countries, and state and local history journals, as well as books, dissertations and book reviews.
  • ATLA Religion Database & ATLA Serials,uid&profile=ehost&defaultdb=rfh

    A comprehensive research database in the fields of religion and theology produced by the American Theological Library Association. Includes bibliographic citations and abstracts to journal articles from over 1,500 titles, citations to essays and book chapters, book reviews, and Doctor of Ministry projects. Many journal articles and book reviews are also available in full text.
  • CIA FOIA - The China Collection

    "This collection of over seventy National Intelligence Estimates on China is the most extensive single selection of intelligence analyses the United States Government ever has released. This recently declassified collection represents the most authoritative intelligence assessments of the United States Government and thus constitutes a unique historical record of a momentous era in China's modern history."
  • Southeast Asian Serials Index

    The focus is on Indonesia and Southeast Asia. "The Southeast Asian Serials Index (SASI) provides access to information on Southeast Asia through the indexing selected academic and current affairs journals published in a range of countries including Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, The Netherlands, Germany, Great Britain, United States and Australia."

    • Personal Papers of Ethel M. Akins, 1913-1980. (LCA 18)

      The Ethel M. Akins Personal Papers collection consists of correspondence to and from Ethel Akins, eight diaries, and various photos from Ethel Akins’s journeys to China, Japan, Tanganyika, Yemen, and Ethiopia. The collection also includes various essays on Japan, China, and Taiwan, various testimonials, The Changing China Scene by Gustav Carlberg, two Watertown High School commencement programs from the Class of 1913, and the “Midwest China Oral History and Archives Collection” volume on Ethel Akins.
    • Mission Tidings, 1921-1958 (LCA 36)
      Mission Tidings was the official magazine of the Women’s Missionary Society of the Lutheran Augustana Synod. Originally printed in both Swedish and English to appease both younger and older readers, it switched entirely to English in 1938. In 1949, the magazine was officially adopted by the Women’s Missionary Society of Augustana Lutheran Church. There are field reports from those serving as missionaries in China and India along with other places outside of Asia.

    A one-volume encyclopedia covering the art, culture, history, literature and religion of Japan. Also contains many biographies. This resource is more like a dictionary and works well as a quick reference source.

    Offers over 900 entries on topics related to the war as well as 70 important primary source documents.
