Countries & Cultures
  • Country Studies

    Prepared by the Federal Research Division, Library of Congress, these online editions of book-length country profiles are produced for U.S. diplomats. This site includes substantial information on each nation's culture, history, economy, and political system. It is searchable by topic and country. Be sure to note publication dates; some volumes are more than ten years old and may include outdated materials.
  • Finland: A Cultural Encyclopedia
    This title covers Finnish music, scholarship, design and architecture, religion, mythology, the media, and education.

  • Historical Dictionary of Finland
    A handbook with brief articles on all aspects of Finnish culture and history, including significant people, places, events, and institutions.

  • Historical Dictionary of Iceland
    This dictionary contains a detailed chronology, notes on the Icelandic language, a listing of abbreviations and acronyms, an introduction which highlights important events in Icelandic history, and a bibliography of titles to assist the interested researcher in learning more about this country.

  • Historical Dictionary of Sweden
    This dictionary provides information ranging from politics to economics, from education to religion, and from music to literature. It contains a chronology, a list of acronyms and abbreviations, an introductory essay, a bibliography, and appendixes.

  • The Saami: A Cultural Encyclopedia
    A handbook with brief articles on all aspects of the indigenous Saami (sometimes spelled Sami) culture of northern Scandinavia and the Kola peninsula.

  • Worldmark Encyclopedia of Cultures and Daily Life
    Offers lengthy articles on over 500 culture groups worldwide. Each article surveys the location and homeland of the people and covers a wealth of information on such topics as their language, folklore, religion, rites of passage, interpersonal relations, living conditions, family life, cultural heritage, work, and social issues. Each entry includes a selective bibliography.

    Global community of scholars for the creation and dissemination of knowledge about international business and policy issues.   • Doing Business

    The Doing Business project provides objective measures of business regulations for local firms in 183 economies and selected cities at the subnational level. A joint effort from the International Finance Corporation and the World Bank.
  • Kiss, Bow, or Shake Hands: Bestselling Guide to Doing Business in More Than 60 Countries
    Covers the protocols of appointments, business entertaining, greetings, forms of address, gestures, dress, and gifts in 60 nations.

  • The State of China Atlas
    Using color maps and graphics to illustrate key economic, political and social indicators, it examines China's economy and the issues facing the country.

  • World Development Indicators

    WDI is a database of global information and statistics compiled yearly.

  • Business Rankings Annual
    A compilation of rankings from the business press, emphasizing the ranking of companies within given industries.

    Full-text coverage to more than 2,800 scholarly journals and trade publications in business, economics, political science and public administration. Selected Datamonitor company reports and EIU country documents are also available. Access is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM).
  • LexisNexis Corporate Affiliations
    8 vols. New Providence, NJ: LexisNexis Group, 2007. Commonly known as "Who Owns Whom," LexisNexis Corporate Affiliations provides basic information (key officers, addresses, and products) on thousands of parent companies, their affiliates, subsidiaries, and divisions. U.S. and international; private and public companies are covered.

  • LexisNexis Academic

    Search current news, business information (including business news and corporate financials), and legal news and information. International news sources are also included.
  • Market Share Reporter
    A compilation of data extracted from periodical articles on top brands in given retail categories, top manufacturers and the largest companies in various sectors.

  • U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. SEC Filings and Forms (EDGAR)

    A public database of reports on publicly held corporations, which are required by federal law to file reports on their activities with the SEC. Most reports filed from 1994 to the present are publicly available through EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval System) on this site. Information in these reports includes financial status, chief officers, stock information, company history, pending litigation that might have an economic impact on the company, and more. A brief tutorial for searching EDGAR is also provided.

    Look for special issues of trade journals for that industry.
