Reference Books
The library owns several biblical commentaries that will be very useful to your research. These books can be found in the Reference section, located immediately to your right as you face the Reference Desk.
  • Anchor Bible Dictionary
    This definitive and current work covers not only names, places, and events of the Bible, but also includes cultural history, social institutions, archeological sites, and other topics of particular interest to Biblical scholars today.

  • The Books of the Bible
    Focuses on treating the books of the Bible ans texts, emphasizing their literary nature and structure, discussing origins, content, purpose, and theological interpretations of each book.

  • Dictionary of the Bible

    Provides information about the books of the Bible, customs, religions and worship, history, and theology, important places, and personalities.
  • Harper's Bible Commentary
    Follows the arrangement of the Bible, giving a brief introduction to each book of the Bible, then a short explanation of major passages. It is very good at making the language of the Bible clear, explaining context, and linking related passages together.

  • New Interpreter's Bible
    Provides the text in two translations, NRSV and New International Version, side by side. Following the texts, there are sections of scholarly commentary and reflections.

  • New Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible
    A solid five-volume alphabetical set offering short scholarly articles on topics, people, and parts of the bible.

  • Oxford Companion to the Bible
    A handy reference volume for key people, places, events, concepts, institutions, and circumstances of biblical times.

Finding Books
For books in the Gustavus library, use the MnPALS catalog. Write down the call number and location information. Use the maps on the library's website, the tags on the sides of shelves, or stop at the Reference Desk to figure out where your book is shelved. To request books from other libraries, visit the Interlibrary Loan page for more information or use the FindIt! button in WorldCat.

    Includes over 40 million bibliographic records representing cataloged resources in 400 languages owned by libraries around the world. Materials date back to the 11th century. Owning libraries can be identified for books, journals, archival resources and electronic resources. Access to WorldCat is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM); the database can also be searched through its free web interface, at worldcat.org.
Finding Articles
Search for articles in any of these databases. If the full text is not available through the database, click on the yellow FindIt! button. The FindIt! button will search all other databases and our print copies to see if we have access to the article. An SFX screen will pop up, directing you to full text options. If you see an option for ILL, it means we will have to request the article from another library. Click the Go button next to the ILL option to be taken directly to the ILL form.

    A comprehensive research database in the fields of religion and theology produced by the American Theological Library Association. Includes bibliographic citations and abstracts to journal articles from over 1,500 titles, citations to essays and book chapters, book reviews, and Doctor of Ministry projects. Many journal articles and book reviews are also available in full text.
  • Biblical Archaeology Society Online Archive

    Search and browse the full text of 8 religion books and journals published by the Biblical Archaeology Society, including the Biblical Archaeology Review and the Bible Review.
  • Old Testament Abstracts

    Old Testament Abstracts is a product of a partnership between ATLA and the Catholic Biblical Association. The database features indexing and abstracts for journal articles, monographs, multi-author works, and software related to Old Testament studies. Content from over 450 journals is covered. All abstracts are in English, regardless of the language of the original work. Topics covered include antiquities, archaeology, biblical theology, philology and much more.
