Reference books are an excellent resource to use during your research. They provide overviews of topics, including countries you may be investigating, as well as statistic, demographic, governmental and any other kind of country data you're looking for. Reference books are shelved on the main floor of the library.
- Europa Regional Surveys of the World
This excellent series provides detailed information on countries, including history, economy, and government, as well as statistical data and a comprehensive directory of political and cultural organizations. Books in this series are shelved throughout the Reference section. Search "regional surveys of the world" in MnPALS to find the book for your country.
- Constitutions of Countries of the World
Provides texts (with English translations when necessary) of constitutions of the world's nations. Each is accompanied by a chronology of events and a brief commentary.

- Statistical Abstract of the World
Presents data on over 180 countries, covering geography, demographics, education, science and technology, government and law, and economics. Sources for all data are noted, and an appendix lists and describes sources, offering important leads to additional data.

- World Economic Outlook
Issued by the International Monetary Fund, this periodic publication provides information about current economic situations around the world. Most recent is in Reference; older editions are in the General Collection.

This report, issued periodically by the United Nations looks at international development from an economic viewpoint. Most recent report is in Reference; earlier reports are in the General Collection.

- World Encyclopedia of Parliaments and Legislatures
Covers parliamentary forms of government in over 190 countries in lengthy profiles that cover the nations' history, structure and procedure of parliamentary governance, relationship to the executive branch, parliamentary ethics and culture, and relevant constitutional issues.

A comprehensive work on topics in peace studies, with in-depth articles on concepts, events, and theories.

- World Resources: A Report by the World Resources Institute and the International Institute for Environment and Development
An annual report on global environmental issues, including land use, water resources, population, and pollution, with many comparative statistical tables and maps.

- MnPALS Plus
The online catalog to the library at Gustavus Adolphus College. Choose "All Libraries" in the search options to search other MnPALS libraries (such as Minnesota State schools) and request books through Interlibrary Loan. View our MnPALS Plus tutorial.
A shared catalog of Minnesota libraries, including the University of Minnesota. To search a large number of libraries at once, choose "Libraries - Academic" from the "Current Profile" list. Use the "Get it!" button to place Interlibrary Loan requests.
Includes over 40 million bibliographic records representing cataloged resources in 400 languages owned by libraries around the world. Materials date back to the 11th century. Owning libraries can be identified for books, journals, archival resources and electronic resources. Access to WorldCat is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM); the database can also be searched through its free web interface, at worldcat.org.
Columbia International Affairs Online contains references to working papers, conference proceedings, journals, books, policy briefs, economic indicators, and more, from 1991 to the present. The database focuses on theory and research in international affairs.
- Public Affairs Index
Covers global contemporary public policy issues, ranging from public health, the environment, housing, human and civil rights, to international conflict and natural disasters. Draws on scholarly publications, conference papers, government documents and reference works.
- SAGE Premier
Search the full text to over 500 scholarly journals published by SAGE in a range of disciplines, including many social sciences titles. Many journals include full backfiles - back to 1960s or earlier. To search articles by discipline, click on the "Browse" tab, then click on the "Articles by Discipline" tab.
- Web of Science (Web of Knowledge)

The Science Citation Index Expanded, the Social Sciences Citation Index, and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Besides indexing a wide range of journals in the sciences, social sciences, and history, this resource allows you to search for articles that cite a specific author or published work. Coverage from 1997 to the present. Click on the "Web of Science" tab to limit your search to one or more specific citation databases.
- Center for World Indigenous Studies
Offers information on various indigenous peoples and the issues of political and cultural identity and nationhood. Of particular note is the Fourth World Docu-Program, which provides full-text documents related to communities around the world as well as relevant international and multilateral documents.
- Guide to Law Online: Nations of the World
A country-by-country directory of legal information, including constitutional, executive, legislative, and judicial law as well as related information such as human rights reports. From the Law Library of Congress.
- Human Rights Watch World Report
An annual publication that surveys the world's human rights record. Each volume offers regional and country surveys summarizing the events of the previous year.
- United Nations
Offers news releases, virtual tours, documents, and basic information about the United Nations and its bodies. Three different search engines explore a large database and list of links. The site includes a wealth of reports, statistical data, and other information on human rights, international law, peacekeeping missions, and other topics. In addition, there is a separate database of official UN documents available on the Web, covering primarily parliamentary documents from 1993 to present.

Links to statistics on trade, demographics, social issues, energy, the environment and industry.
