Topic Overview
Looking for a deeper grounding in your topic? Reference books are a great way to get an overview of your topic, glean ideas for search terms, and find lists of recommended reading. All Reference books are shelved on the west side of the second (main) floor of the library.
  • The Cambridge Ancient History
    This authoritative history covers the ancient world chronologically.

  • Dictionary of Architecture and Landscape Architecture

    Offers thousands of brief entries on terms, periods, styles, and architects in Western architectural history, with slightly longer entries on architectural schools and movements.
  • Dictionary of Art
    An exhaustive encyclopedia of world art, containing articles written by scholars on artists, movements, works, and subjects, each followed by a selective bibliography.

  • Encyclopedia of World Art
    Offers scholarly and thorough articles on artists, movements, media, periods, national traditions, and so on. Each volume has a section of plates in the back. There is an index to the entire set, as well as supplementary volumes presenting newer information. Though more dated than the Dictionary of Art, above, this set remains useful, particularly for its thorough indexing of plates, making it a good source for locating images of art works.

  • Greek Literature
    A compendium of writings by philological scholars on ancient Greek literature from the oral tradition and Homer to Greek literature during the Roman and Byzantine periods.

  • Greek-English Lexicon
    This standard Greek dictionary was first published in 1843 and has gone through numerous revisions. It not only gives definitions but cites texts in which the words were used.

  • Oxford Companion to Classical Literature
    A handy guide to writers and works from the Classical times, giving concise discussions on the social and cultural context of the literature. A concise version is available online.

  • Oxford Dictionary of Art

    Covers Western art from ancient Greece to the present, with nearly 4,000 entries on artists, periods, movements, and styles.

Owning libraries can be identified for books, journals, archival resources and electronic resources. Access to WorldCat is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM); the database can also be searched through its free web interface, at worldcat.org.

    Annual index of scholarly publications relating to the civilizations of ancient Greece and Rome (500 BCE to 800 CE). The most complete index available for classics, this resource includes over 375,000 citations to articles, books, book reviews, conference proceedings, and essays on on all aspects of Greek and Latin cultures, including literature, language, art, archaeology, philosophy, and religion. International in scope, it indexes works in all languages.

    Search tips: To begin your search, click "Enter." Select "Full Text" to search the full text of the citations. Select "Subjects and discplines" to search or browse the tables of contents in two separate files: since volume 67 (since 1996) and before volume 67. Click "Read the total" to view the results of your search.
  • Art Index
    An author and subject index to art periodicals, covering all periods and media of art, including film and photography. Particularly helpful for locating reproductions in periodicals as well as research studies and news of sales and exhibitions. This index is only available in print form.

  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index (Web of Knowledge)

    A multidisciplinary index covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. This index fully covers 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, and also includes some individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals. Some of the disciplines covered include archaeology, linguistics, art, literature, music, philosophy, dance, history, religion and theater.

    Full-text backfiles to over 350 scholarly journals from more than 25 academic disciplines published between the 19th and 21st centuries in the JSTOR Arts & Sciences I, Arts & Sciences II, and Language & Literature collections. JSTOR provides complete journal backruns from the date of initial publication up to a "moving wall" of 3 to 5 years before the present year. To limit your search to full text articles, make sure that the option to "include links to external content" is turned off.

Topics covered include literary theory; classics; history and cultural studies; philosophy; film, theatre and the performing arts; political science and mathematics.
  • TLG: Thesaurus Linguae Graecae

    This digital library contains virtually all Greek texts surviving from the period between Homer (8th century BCE) and 600 CE and the majority of surviving works up the fall of Byzantium in 1453 CE. It currently includes 12,000 works representing 3,700 authors and continues its efforts to include all extant Greek texts from the byzantine and post-byzantine period. The database offers a number of different screen displays for the Greek in each work. It is accessible from a designated computer in the Classics department office and two computers on the main floor of the library, on the wall opposite the library's e-classroom.
