Resources for Education

Students of education must master not only the subjects they will teach but the methods and theoretical foundations of teaching itself. This guide to library resources for education lists some of the most useful tools for research in the field. Indexes and Databases

  • ERIC
    ERIC is the major index to literature in education. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, it provides full citations and abstracts for journal articles, books, curricula, government documents, dissertations, and research reports selected by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). ERIC citations date from 1966 to the present, and full text is available for many research reports. You may limit your search to show only results with free full text.

  • Educator's Reference Complete
    This upgrade to the Professional Collection database includes more than 450 full-text academic journals, hundreds of full-text reports, and many premier reference sources. Content focuses on educational principles, child development and psychology, and best practices in education. Majority of the full-text titles included are also found in the ERIC database. Access is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM).
  • Professional Development Collection
    Designed for professional educators, this database provides a collection of nearly 520 education journals, including more than 350 peer-reviewed titles. Also contains more than 200 educational reports. Access is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM).
  • Teacher Reference Center
    Provides indexing and abstracts for over 280 of the most popular teacher and administrator trade journals, periodicals and books to assist professional educators. Coverage includes assessment, curriculum development, literacy standards, and more.
  • Web of Science (Web of Knowledge)
    The Science Citation Index Expanded, the Social Sciences Citation Index, and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI). Besides indexing a wide range of journals in the sciences, social sciences, and history, this resource allows you to search for articles that cite a specific author or published work. Coverage from 1997 to the present. Click on the "Web of Science" tab to limit your search to one or more specific citation databases.

      Offers short articles on various topics related to K-12 education as well as higher education and adult learning.

      Covers education theory, history of education, education and social forces, and education reform effortsin over 850 articles, emphasizing the U.S. experience, but with some international perspectives. Volume 8 includes primary sources and a thematic outline.

    • World Education Encyclopedia: A Survey of Educational Systems Worldwide

      Here you can find articles on educational systems arranged by country, describing their history, giving an overview of education at all levels, some discussion of administration and financing, and the state of the profession. There are statistical tables and bibliographies for each country covered.

    • The Gateway to Educational Materials
      A directory of classroom materials. The site offers a sophisticated search engine, allowing to limit a topic by grade level, as well as browsing by keyword or subject. Search results lead to lesson plans, curriculum units, and other Web materials for educators. The site is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
    • SMETE
      A collection of digital resources for teaching science, math, engineering, and technology. Though some of the material is for college-level teaching, quite a bit is geared toward K-12 education.
