Tips and Tools

  • Naxos Music Library Tip
The Naxos iPhone/iPod App allows you remote access to your account playlist. The App is available for free at the iTunes App store. To generate a login for the App, go to from a computer on campus, navigate to the playlist area, and then create a "Personal/Student" playlist account. This account login (your e-mail address and a custom password) then becomes your App login. Naxos recommends creating a playlist on a computer before attempting to access it through the App. For more help with creating a playlist account, see this Naxos YouTube video or Naxos Blog post.

    • Finding Articles Tutorial
View our video tutorial for a quick introduction to finding articles using the yellow Find It! button.
  • Having problems accessing an e-resource? Here are a few tips:
Contact or call the reference desk (x7567) or circulation desk/front desk (x7557) for assistance. The more of the following information you can gather, the better we can assist you:
    • Are you attempting to access the e-resource from on campus or remotely?
      • If you're off campus, are you accessing the e-resource through the library home page?
      • If you're off campus, are you using your 14-digit barcode from your Gustavus ID as your username and your last name as your password? And what is your barcode?
    • Are you unable to access one specific e-resource (for instance, a specific journal or database), or are you unable to access multiple e-resources? Which e-resource(s)?
      • The more information we have (for instance, the full article citation) the better we can troubleshoot the problem.
    • Which operating system are you using? (Mac, PC, etc.)
    • What browser (and version number) are you using? (Firefox, IE, Safari, etc.)
    • Are you using a database with user limits?
While most of our databases allow for unlimited simultaneous users, some of them have restrictions. For example, America: History and Life=6 users, Grove Music=1 user, Oxford Reference Online= 1 user, Journals@Ovid (Nursing)=13 users shared by 8 schools, Naxos Music Library=10 users, SPORTDiscus=4 users, and SciFinder=2 users shared by 3 schools.
    • What appears on the screen when you try to access the e-resource? Please describe or provide a screen shot of the error message you receive.
  • Trouble viewing PDFs in EBSCO databases?
Are you receiving a "Plug-in not found" error in EBSCOhost databases when opening a PDF on a Mac using Safari? (EBSCO databases includes Academic Search Premier, ATLA, MLA Bibliography, PsycINFO, RILM). According to EBSCO, "This issue is most frequently seen when trying to view a PDF file on a Mac running the Safari 5.1 browser. Apple has made a fundamental change to their operating system that prevents PDFs in the EBSCOhost interface from being viewable using your current Adobe PDF viewer plug-ins. This issue is something we are aware of and are working with Apple directly to get this resolved. In the meantime, we are advising our customers using Apple products to install the following plug-in as a work around as this issue will take some time to be resolved:"
