    An exhaustive encyclopedia of world art, containing articles written by scholars on artists, movements, works, and subjects, each followed by a selective bibliography.

  • Dictionary of Christian Art
    New York: Continuum 1994
    Offers brief discussions of people, topics, and symbols important in Christian art. Especially good at drawing parallels between Classical and Biblical iconography and at identifying important biblical passages. Illustrated with a number of black and white plates.

  • Dictionary of the Middle Ages
    New York: Scribner's 1982
    13 vols. A scholarly, readable, and beautifully laid-out encyclopedia covering people, events, ideas, movements, texts, and cultural features of the medieval world. Articles are often illustrated with period art work and are followed by bibliographies of primary and secondary sources.

  • Encyclopaedia Judaica
    Detroit: Macmillan Reference 2007 2nd ed. edition
    An excellent source for information on the Jewish people and religion, offering scholarly and in-depth articles, recently updated to include current research on historical and contemporary topics.

  • Encyclopedia of Islam and the Muslim World
    New York: Macmillan Reference 2004
    Provides an overview of individuals, concepts, and topics related to Islam.

  • Encyclopedia of Religion
    Detroit: Macmillan Reference 2005 2nd ed. edition
    Covers religions from around the world and through history as well as people and ideas related to religion. The articles are written by experts in their fields and include excellent bibliographies. This new edition includes hundreds of new articles, thoroughly revised coverage of all topics in religion, and a handful of "visual essays" that illustrate visual culture as a significant aspect of religion.

  • Encyclopedia of World Art
    New York: McGraw-Hill 1959-
    Offers scholarly and thorough articles on artists, movements, media, periods, national traditions, and so on. Each volume has a section of plates in the back. There is an index to the entire set, as well as supplementary volumes presenting newer information. Though more dated than the Dictionary of Art, above, this set remains useful, particularly for its thorough indexing of plates, making it a good source for locating images of art works.

    A comprehensive history of Europe from 500 to 1500 AD.

  • New Catholic Encyclopedia
    Detroit: Gale 2002
    This recently-revised encyclopedia covers many general topics, but is particularly thorough in its coverage of Catholic doctrine, history, and traditional practice. Includes many illustrations.

  • Oxford Dictionary of Art
    Oxford: Oxford UP 2004 3rd edition
    Covers Western art from ancient Greece to the present, with nearly 4,000 entries on artists, periods, movements, and styles.
  • Oxford Reference Online
    Over 100 full text language and subject dictionaries and reference works. Topics covered include general reference, language, science and medicine, humanities, social sciences, and business.

    An author and subject index to art periodicals, covering all periods and media of art, including film and photography. Particularly helpful for locating reproductions in periodicals as well as research studies and news of sales and exhibitions. This index is only available in print form.

    A multidisciplinary index covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. This index fully covers 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, and also includes some individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals. Some of the disciplines covered include archaeology, linguistics, art, literature, music, philosophy, dance, history, religion and theater.

    Full-text backfiles to over 350 scholarly journals from more than 25 academic disciplines published between the 19th and 21st centuries in the JSTOR Arts & Sciences I, Arts & Sciences II, and Language & Literature collections. JSTOR provides complete journal backruns from the date of initial publication up to a "moving wall" of 3 to 5 years before the present year. To limit your search to full text articles, make sure that the option to "include links to external content" is turned off.
