Resources for Leadership Studies

Resources on leadership can be found in various areas throughout the library. This guide points out some reference books, indexes, and strategies that will help you get started. Don't hesitate to ask a librarian for help if you aren't finding what you need.

Indexes and Databases
  • Academic Search Premier
    The world's largest academic multi-disciplinary database, Academic Search Premier indexes nearly 8,050 publications and provides full text for nearly 4,600, including more than 3,500 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage also includes many newspapers and popular magazines and spans virtually every area of academic study since 1975. Updated daily.   • Business Source Premier
    Full-text coverage to more than 2,800 scholarly journals and trade publications in business, economics, political science and public administration. Selected Datamonitor company reports and EIU country documents are also available. Access is provided by the Electronic Library for Minnesota (ELM).
  • Catalog of Nonprofit Literature
    A free database from the Foundation Center. Contains approximately 27,000 full bibliographic citations on the literature of philanthropy.
  • ERIC
    ERIC is the major index to literature in education. Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, it provides full citations and abstracts for journal articles, books, curricula, government documents, dissertations, and research reports selected by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). ERIC citations date from 1966 to the present, and full text is available for many research reports. You may limit your search to show only results with free full text.

  • LexisNexis Academic
    Search current news, business information (including business news and corporate financials), and legal news and information. International news sources are also included.
    Coverage varies by title; mostly 1980s-present
  • PsycINFO
    Citations and abstracts to articles from more than 1300 international journals in psychology and related fields, going back to 1840. This database covers all areas of psychology, including experimental, developmental, communications, social processes and issues, personality, physical and psychological disorders, professional issues, applied psychology, educational psychology, and behavioral literature in such related fields as law, business and medicine. Also includes citations for books and book chapters.
  • SAGE Premier
    Search the full text to over 500 scholarly journals published by SAGE in a range of disciplines, including many social sciences titles. Many journals include full backfiles - back to 1960s or earlier. To search articles by discipline, click on the "Browse" tab, then click on the "Articles by Discipline" tab.

  • Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics
    San Diego, CA: Academic 2012 2nd ed. edition
    Offers excellent overviews of ways in which a wide variety of issues can be analyzed from an ethical standpoint. Includes articles on such topics as advertising, affirmative action, fetal research, religion in schools, and many other topics.

  • Encyclopedia of Education
    New York: Macmillan Reference 2003 2nd ed. edition
    Covers education theory, history of education, education and social forces, and education reform effortsin over 850 articles, emphasizing the U.S. experience, but with some international perspectives. Volume 8 includes primary sources and a thematic outline.

  • Encyclopedia of Management
    Thomson Gale 2009 7th edition
    Over 300 short essays on topics ranging from morale and mentoring to consumer behavior and performance appraisal.

  • Encyclopedia of Psychology
    American Psychological Association 2000
    An authoritative source of articles on topics, methods, findings, advances, and applications in the field. Each article is followed by a current bibliography of the key works on the topic.

Browsing for Books
Books are shelved in general subject categories using the Library of Congress classification system. You may want to supplement your use of the catalog with browsing shelf areas for your topic. Browse for general leadership books under call numbers beginning with HD57.7 on the upper level of the library. Below is a brief listing of some of the subject locations in leadership studies:

Center for Creative Leadership - A nonprofit organization that provides research, training, and publications in leadership development.

Community Leadership Association - Lists community leadership programs, directories, conferences with scholarship information, and publications.

International Leadership Association - "the global network for all those who practice, study and teach leadership"

Leadership Center (Washington State University) - Includes leadership readings, tips, and links to other leadership resources.
