The Portable Communion Set of Rev. Prof. Arthur C.P. Hays contains a sterling silver paten (bread tray and holder), a chalice, and a ewer (pitcher for holding wine).
Arthur C.P. Hays was born in Pennsylvania in 1897. He graduated from Thiel College in 1917. Hays continued his education by attending Chicago Lutheran Theological Seminary from 1917-20. He completed an additional year of theological work at the Chicago Divinity School. He was ordained in 1921 by the Pittsburgh Synod of the United Lutheran Church in America. In 1923 he moved to Minnesota and worked as pastor of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Oxboro and as an instructor at Northwestern Seminary in Minneapolis. In 1926 he began working full time at the Seminary as Instructor of Greek and the New Testament. He also taught Greek at the University of Minnesota, where he received a Master’s degree in 1933. In 1935 he was elected as Professor of New Testament and head of the department. Hays was also the Seminary Librarian. He died 7 April 1953.
