Appreciative Advising, developed by Jennifer Bloom, a professor at the University of South Carolina.

This is a well-researched, effective approach to academic advising that starts with the basics and then goes beyond. It provides a format to help advisors support and encourage those first-years, but also to challenge students as they grow to reflect on what they are learning and identify ways to enhance their academic experience.

 

NACADA is the professional association of academic advising and has tons of resources for everything from strategies for reluctant advisees to hints for building an advisor/advisee relationship.
