What is a USB-C Dock?

The docks are designed to streamline the process of employees unplugging and taking home their laptops at the end of the day. Ideally, employees will need only unplug the hub from the USB-C port on their laptop.

What Ports are Available on the Dock?

  1. Thinkpad: These hubs are paired with Windows laptops. The hub comes with an ethernet port, two display ports, a VGA port, five USB ports, a headphone jack, USB-C ports, and a charging port.
  2. HooToo: These hubs are paired with Macintosh laptops. The hub comes with an ethernet port, one HDMI port, three USB-A ports, and a USB-C port charging port.

USB-C Driver

You should install a driver on the laptop for the Thinkpad hubs that increases the internet speed. This driver can be found on Lenovo's site

What do the USB-C Docks Do?

  • Ethernet Port: Will act as a wired internet connection. This will need to be registered in GReg as a personal device. It's also important to write "USB-C Dock" in the comments section.
  • Monitor Ports: These will connect the hub/laptop to the monitors.
  • USB Ports: Keyboard and mice should be plugged into the ports.
  • USB-C Ports: One of these will serve as the connection between the hub and the laptop for Thinkpad hubs. For Hootoo hubs, the USB-C port will connect to a power cord and charge the laptop.
  • Charging Port: For Thinkpad hubs, there is one port that powers the hub and charges the laptop(this comes with the dock and is the charging block that provides enough power to charge the laptop through the dock).
  • External USB Cord Connection: For HooToo hubs, the cord plugs into one of the USB-C ports on the laptop and serves as the connection between the hub and the laptop.

How do I Find the MAC address?

  1. Thinkpad: The MAC address is listed on the bottom of the hub.
  2. HooToo: Plug the hub into the USB-C port on the laptop, plug in an ethernet cable from a magic port into the hub, and open Network Utility. In the drop-down menu, select your network interface, which should be something like "USB 10/100/1000 LAN en3." The MAC address should be listed after "Hardware Address."

What Accessories do the Hubs Need?

  1. Thinkpad: Monitor cables and adapters, a Lenovo USB-C power cable and charging block, and possibly a keyboard, mouse, and disk drive.
  2. HooToo: Monitor cables and adapters, an Apple USB-C power cable and charging block, and possibly a keyboard, mouse, and disk drive.

How do I set up Dual Monitors?

Macintosh

  • USB-C Docks: The HooToo docks have only one port, and it is an HDMI port. One monitor cable should go from the dock(HDMI) to the monitor. The other monitor cable will need a USB-C to HDMI adapter, which needs to be plugged into one of the USB-C ports on the laptop, followed by a monitor cable.

Windows

  • USB-C Docks: The Thinkpad docks have two DisplayPort ports, so they may need different monitor cables.
