ZIP (file format)

The ZIP file format is a popular data compression and archival format. A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed or stored.

Creating a ZIP file

On Windows XP

To create a ZIP file on Windows XP, perform the following steps:

  1. Select the files that you would like to put in your ZIP file.
  2. Right-click on one of the selected files.
  3. Select Send To > Compressed (zipped) Folder.
    1. An error may show up saying "For Compressed (zipped) Folders to handle ZIP files correctly, the application associated with them must be Compressed (zipped) Folders. Currently this is not the case." Click Yes.

On Windows 10

To create a ZIP file on Windows 10, perform the following steps:

  1. Locate the file or folder that you want to zip
  2. Press and hold (or right click) the file or folder
  3. Select "Send to," and then select "Compressed (zipped) folder"

On a Macintosh

  1. Select the files or folder you wish to zip
  2. Right click and choose "Compress"

Accessing a Zip file

If you cannot open a .zip file, then there are third party software that can help you. 7Zip is a free program that will open .zip files for you and it's free! It can be downloaded here http://www.7-zip.org.
