Terminal is the name of a terminal emulator application included with Mac OS X. It allows users to interact with their Mac through a command line interface, although it is geared towards more advanced users.

Terminal is located in the /Applications/Utilities folder.

I cannot empty the trash can on OS X Tiger. It says the files/folder is in use and/or locked.

  1. Launch Terminal
  2. Type sudo rm -rf (leave a space after sudo, after rm, and after -rf).
  3. Drag the folder into the Terminal window; the path to it will appear.
  4. Press Return and type your administrator password.
  5. Press Return again.
  6. Type exit and press Return for the last time.
  7. Quit Terminal. The folder will be gone.
