Symantec Endpoint Protection(Redirected from Symantec Antivirus)

Symantec Corporation

Symantec Endpoint Protection is the latest version of Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition. Gustavus began implementing this software in Spring 2008 and it became standard on PC images for Fall 2008.

Beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year, Gustavus Technology Services will no longer offer Symantec Endpoint Protection for installation on personally or institutionally owned computers. Campus network users (Windows) will still be required to have a functional antivirus program installed on their computer. These programs include Norton, Kaspersky, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc.

We recommend using the free Microsoft Security Essentials. On Windows 8 machines, the standard Windows Defender program is recommended and no other av solution is required.

Weekly scans

By default, Symantec Endpoint Protection will scan your hard drive every week to eliminate any viruses that may not have been caught by the Proactive Threat Protection built into the program. This feature can not be disabled on the Gustavus Network, but the scan can be stopped. Stopping the virus scan every week is not recommended and may lead to further problems.

Institutional users who would like to adjust their scanning times, frequency or other features, can run the Remove Required Scan Registry File.

Update virus definitions

Normally, Endpoint Protection will automatically download and install its own virus definitions when new ones are available. If you would like to manually download new definitions read on.

To update virus definitions in Endpoint Protection simply open the program by clicking the yellow shield in the taskbar (by the clock). Then click LiveUpdate on the left of the window shown below.
