Quarantine

If during a scan, Symantec Endpoint Protection detects a file that does not respond properly when scanned. Files placed in quarantine are set aside and cannot interact with other files. Not all files that are quarantined are infected with a virus. If there is a virus, worm, or Trojan, it cannot spread.

If a file is placed in Quarantine is it automatically deleted?

  • No. There are several options for quarantined files including restore, delete, and rescan.

Should I delete it?

  • Some files should not be deleted right away, as they may be part of a working program and would cause the program to be unable to run properly. If the file is deleted, you may need to uninstall and reinstall the entire program. Some files may be restored if you rescan it, Symantec no longer requires the file to be quarantined, AND you are certain that it is not infected. Please note: Beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year, Gustavus Technology Services will no longer offer Symantec Endpoint Protection for installation on personally-owned computers. Campus network users (Windows) will still be required to have a functional antivirus program installed on their computer. These programs include Norton, Kaspersky, etc. On Windows 8 machines, the standard Windows Defender program is recommended. Most antivirus programs include a quarantine-style portion with similar purpose.
