PuTTY is the name of a free software SSH, Telnet, rlogin, and raw TCP client. PuTTY is installed on most Windows computers at Gustavus.

If you're using PuTTY to access your home directory, you should use the host shell.gac.edu.

"PuTTY" can also refer to the entire bundle of related applications the ssh client comes with (since they're usually downloaded at the same time):

  • PuTTY - a Telnet and SSH client
  • PSCP - an SCP client, i.e. command-line secure file copy
  • PSFTP - an SFTP client, i.e. general file transfer sessions much like FTP
  • PuTTYtel - a Telnet-only client
  • Plink - a command-line interface to the PuTTY back ends
  • Pageant - an SSH authentication agent for PuTTY, PSCP and Plink
  • PuTTYgen - an RSA and DSA key generation utility.
