Lab, Multimedia, or Kiosk - Mac

Imaging and/or Cascading Quick Links

Lab / Multimedia / Kiosk

There are two possible scenarios when imaging a Mac at Gustavus. First, is a simple re-image of the existing Mac without moving any equipment around. Second, is imaging a Mac that is either a new Mac that's never been imaged before or a Mac that has been moved from one location on campus to another. This article will go over the complete process for both scenarios and give some troubleshooting tips.

Hardware Database

The Hardware Database on FileMaker must be updated for all machines that are imaged.

  1. Make sure all machines have GAC Tags.
  2. Update the record for the machine in FileMaker.
  3. Print a new label of the hostname of the Mac and attach it to the Mac.

Imaging an Existing Mac

Make sure the Mac is registered in gReg properly.

  1. Boot the computer while holding the N key. This will boot the computer off the network to the Gustavus DeployStudio Server.
  2. The DeployStudio screen will load.
  3. Enter your Gustavus username and password and click login.
  4. Select the desired computer image from the list of images (i.e. SierraMunki2_LMK17).
  5. Press the play button.
  6. Machine will reboot several times before all software and settings are installed.
  7. The image process will take 1-4 hours to complete. Please check the machines after this time period to ensure all software and settings are installed.

Imaging a New or Moved Mac

Make sure the Mac is registered in gReg properly.

  1. Make sure the Mac is registered in gReg properly.
  2. Give Dan Z. a list of the serial numbers of the Macs being imaged via email or fusion ticket.
  3. Boot the computer while holding the N key. This will boot the computer off the network to the Gustavus DeployStudio Server.
  4. The DeployStudio screen will load.
  5. Enter your Gustavus username and password and click login.
  6. Select the desired computer image from the list of images (i.e. SierraMunki2_LMK17).
  7. Press the play button.
  8. The image process will take 1-4 hours to complete. Please check the machines after this time period to ensure all software and settings are installed.

Checking the Macs After Imaging

All Machines

  1. Open Managed Software Center and check for updates.
  2. Is the Gustavus background present when logged in?
  3. Is the Dock populated with Gustavus applications such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Chrome, and Firefox?
  4. Are there any question mark icons on the Dock?
  5. Are printers installed?
  6. Are you able to send a job to print.gac.edu?

Lab Machines

  1. Are you able to log in using your Gustavus username and password?
  2. Are the files from your home directory present?
  3. If this is a specialty lab, such as the Digital Arts Lab, is the appropriate software installed?

Kiosk Machines

  1. Does the gustavus guest user automatically login?
  2. When you logout does the Mac automatically reboot?

Multimedia Machines

  1. Does the gustavus guest user automatically login?
  2. If this Mac is in a specialty lab, such as the Digital Arts Lab, is the appropriate software installed?

Troubleshooting

Q: The Mac is stuck on the Gustavus background and I can't move the mouse - what should I do?

A: Sometimes the Macs get stuck on the DeployStudio image screen. Power off the Mac by pressing and holding the power button and then turn it back on. The image process should resume.

Q: The Mac is asking me to choose my language and create a user - what should I do?

A: The Mac didn't image properly. Re-image this machine.

Q: The Mac doesn't have the Gustavus background - what should I do?

A1: The Mac is not enrolled in Profile Manager - the software used to manage groups and settings on Macs. Connect to Macsoft, open the Tools folder and copy the EnrollJakku.pkg to the Desktop. Double-click to run and install the EnrollJakku.pkg. The background should reappear momentarily. If this doesn't work try A2 below.

A2: The Mac is not in the right group. Get the serial number and IP address of the Mac and give it to Dan Z. with the location of this Mac and it's purpose (lab, multimedia, kiosk). Dan Z. will move it to the correct group which will give it the correct background.

Q: The Mac has question mark icons in the dock - what should I do?

A1: The Mac is not enrolled in Profile Manager - the software used to manage groups and settings on Macs. Connect to Macsoft, open the Tools folder and copy the EnrollJakku.pkg to the Desktop. Double-click to run and install the EnrollJakku.pkg. Open Managed Software Center and check for updates. If this doesn't work try A2 below.

A2: The Mac is not in the right group and it does not have the correct software installed as a result. Get the serial number of the Mac and give it to Dan Z. with the location of this Mac and it's purpose (lab, multimedia, kiosk). Dan Z. will move it to the correct group which will cause the correct software to install which will fix the Dock icons.

Q: I can't log in using my Gustavus username and password - what should I do?

A: This Mac isn't bound to Active Directory, the software that lets users log in with their Gustavus account. Connect to Macsoft, open the Tools folder, and run the ADFix.app tool. Reboot the Mac and try logging in again.

Q: Managed Software Center looks like it's stuck in a loop, it keeps trying to install the same thing - what should I do?

A: Press Command + Q to close Managed Software Center (you'll probably have to close it multiple times). Log in as admin, open Managed Software Center, and check for updates. Reboot and see if the problem continues.
