Kurzweil Web License from Disability Services

The Disability Services Department at Gustavus has a limited number of Kurzweil Web Licenses for student use. Access is controlled by username and password, administered by the Disability Services Department. The Kurzweil software is an assistive technology that delivers text to speech and other powerful tools to users.

Kurzweil Web License

The Kurzweil Web License allows users with active accounts to use the full version of Kurzweil on any computer that has the web License Client software installed. Access is controlled by username and password. Accounts are created and managed by the Disability Services Office at Gustavus. The client software needs to be installed to allow this.

FireFly

FireFly is a web based solution for already created Kurzweil files. Files are shared in a web based library. Users can upload their own Kurzweil files, view those shared by an administrator, or use the public library. Access is controlled by username and password. Accounts are created and managed by the Disability Services Office at Gustavus. This option is available from any computer with a current internet browser and a username and password. There is also an iPad app for FireFly, with the same features as the website.

Kurzweil Add-on for FireFox

This is an extension for FireFox that adds Kurzweil "read the web" functionality to a web browser. It is available only for FireFox. User must have a copy of Kurzweil software (web license client) installed and running in order for the extension to work.

System Requirements

  • Minimum G3 processor, running Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) to 10.6 (Snow Leopard).
  • Minimum 128 MB RAM (512MB RAM for Cepstral voices).
  • Minimum 300 MB of hard disk space (500 MB for Cepstral voices).
  • Internet connection required for product use.

  • Read Me file - A text file that contains last minute information about Kurzweil 3000 that didn’t make it into the documentation.
  • Extras folder, which contains: Cepstral folder. Contains installer for high-quality speaking voices from Cepstral®.
  • Read the Web folder (in the Extras Folder) - Contains the Mozilla Firefox Web browser and the Kurzweil 3000 Read the Web Firefox extension.
  • Sample Files folder - Contains documents that you can use to try Kurzweil 3000.
  • Documentation folder - Contains PDF versions of the Kurzweil 3000 Installation and Administration Guide, and the Kurzweil 3000 for Macintosh Quick Reference Guide.

Step by Step Installation Guide Kurzweil Web License (Macintosh)

  1. Click on the following link to download the Macintosh Version of Kurzweil: Gustavus Download of Kurzweil for Macintosh.
  2. Save the Kurzweil 3000 5.x.x Web License dmg file.
  3. When the download is complete - double click the *.dmg file.
  4. Click and drag the Kurzweil 3000 application to your Applications Folder.
  5. Drag the Read Me.rtf and Extras Folder to your local hard drive.
  6. Open the Extras folder and click on Cepstral and install the Cepstral David and Callie voices.

Step by Step Installation Guide for Kurzweil Read the Web Add-on for FireFox (Macintosh)

  • Install or update your version of FireFox.
    • To Install - visit http://www.getfirefox.com. Download and install FireFox.
    • To update - from the Firefox menu - select About FireFox. Apply any updates.

  • Verify all that all your FireFox plug ins are updated.
  • Install the KESIReader Extension.
    • In FireFox from the Tools menu - select Add-Ons.
    • Select the gear on the Add-ons window - select Install Add-on from file.
    • Navigate to the Extras Folder from the installation. In the Extras folder double-click the Read the Web folder.
    • Select the KESIReader.xpi file.
    • Follow the prompts - restart FireFox.

Step by Step Installation Guide for Kurzweil Web License (Windows)

  1. Download the Kurzweil Web for Windows Client from to the Gustavus Kurzweil/Windows Download.
  2. Download and save the Kurzweil 3000 exe.
  3. Double-click the downloaded file (K-3000_k3_1316_W_F.exe)
  4. The installer will prompt you for a folder to uppack the installer in - you can select any location.
  5. After unpacking - the installer will start automatically.
  6. Select Web Licensing Software.
  7. Select Install Web Licensing Software.
  8. Follow the installation prompts, clicking next and agreeing to the license agreement, following the prompts.
  9. Restart your computer.
  10. Launch the Kurzweil app from your Start Menu - All Programs - Kurzweil Educational Systems - Kurzweil 3000.
  11. Supply the credentials that you received in an email from Cambium Tech Customer Service when your account was created. If you need help with this please email Kelly Karstad or Margo Druschel.

  • Install or update your version of FireFox.

  • Launch the Kurzweil application.
  • From the Tools menu select Options.

  • Select Mozilla Firefox and click Apply.
  • Follow the prompts to install the KESIReader extension. Click Yes, to install the extension.
  • Quit FireFox - if it is running.
  • Install the FireFox extension, by clicking Install Now.
