JOB SUMMARY:  The primary purpose of this position is to provide leadership and strategic direction by designing, delivering, and directing a comprehensive and integrated program of career services for the college’s ten-million-dollar endowed center. Responsible for the effective operation of the Office of Career Development including: staff supervision, budget oversight, operations, assessment, and strategic initiatives; represents Career Development within the College, to community partners and employers.


  • Supervise the strategic growth of the Office of Career Development through thoughtful management of the Center’s ten-million-dollar endowment.
  • Ensure delivery of outstanding career development programs, resources, services and communications for students, campus partners, and off campus partners.
  • Supervise professional staff.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to identify, define, and address student career planning goals and objectives.
  • Develop relationships with employers and other off-campus partners to facilitate the hiring of Gustavus students for internships, career explorations, graduate programs and full-time employment.
  • Ensure the mission, goals and objectives of the Career Development area are successfully accomplished.
  • Serve as a visionary leader, who can communicate about and coordinate a complex campus-wide career services network.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current regional and national workforce developments, market trends, recruitment issues and economic forecasting which affects hiring and best practices in career development.
  • Effectively facilitate and manage change within an organization.
  • Assume responsibility for the efficient and effective operation of Gustavus Career Development:
    • Establish and implement short and long range organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies and operating procedures; monitor and evaluate programmatic and operational effectiveness; make changes required for improvement.
    • Fiscally responsible for budget; prepare, allocate, administering budget based on priorities.
    • Ensure that Career Development utilizes technology such as computer databases and web-based environments facilitate service delivery and community outreach by connecting students to alumni and job seekers to employers.
    • Analyze data, write reports, and share assessment results with the College and to the Career Development endowment donor as appropriate.
    • Administrative functions related office operations, assessment, evaluation and planning.
    • Participate in division meetings, programs, committees and assignments as directed.
  • Demonstrated leadership for equity and inclusive excellence.
  • All other duties as assigned.



  • Bachelor’s degree in related field. 
  • Three years of demonstrated supervisory experience with full-time professional staff.  
  • Knowledge of corporations, career development, career counseling, job search strategies, job market trends, employer relations, contemporary recruitment practices, and/or trends in career services.


  • Advanced degree (master’s or doctorate) in higher education administration/student affairs, counseling, business, or related discipline.
  • Experience working with undergraduate students.
  • Five or more years of progressive experience in career development and/or talent acquisition.
  • Highly developed skills and experience in collaborating with others within career services and across the college campus (e.g., students, staff, faculty, etc.).
  • Knowledge of and proficiency with computer databases and web-based environments to facilitate service delivery and community outreach.

Employment Type: Full-Time, 12 months, Exempt (Salaried)
