Description

Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Theatre and Dance to begin September 1, 2023.

Institution Information: Gustavus Adolphus College seeks employees who are committed to and will be resolute in advancing inclusion and equity. We seek candidates whose experience has prepared them to help us realize our college-wide goal of engagement and inclusion of culturally and racially diverse audiences in the humanities, arts, and sciences. The Gustavus Acts strategic plan renews our commitment to equip students to lead purposeful lives, and to act on the great challenges of our time by diversifying and expanding the Gustavus community and delivering a distinctive and integrated liberal arts education.

To support these goals, Gustavus Adolphus College is currently in the third year of a multiyear, multi-departmental hiring initiative to enhance and diversify departmental curricular and co-curricular offerings. Faculty at Gustavus have opportunities to participate in our interdisciplinary Programs, including African/African Diaspora Studies; Latin American, Latinx, and Caribbean Studies; Peace, Justice, and Conflict Studies; and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies. Minnesota is home to vibrant and increasingly racially diverse communities, and we believe that representation from these communities positively contributes to our student body. We especially seek faculty members whose impact will be to advance academic and cultural programs in areas relevant to African, Black, or Indigenous history, arts, and culture, while also helping the College engage and support students of color.

We are committed to fostering a community that embodies the value of a liberal arts education rooted in pluralism. We engage in this work at a coeducational, private, Lutheran (ELCA) College of Swedish immigrant heritage that is a leading residential, national liberal arts institution of 2200 students.

Department Information: The Department of Theatre and Dance involves students in creative inquiry, embodied knowledge, inventive collaboration, and skillful expression of ideas emphasizing the value of performance as a vital means of working for social justice and personal transformation. We are a production-driven department with two mainstage venues (including the brand-new Rob and Judy Gardner Laboratory Theatre) and multiple supporting studio spaces and fully equipped production shops. This new hire will have the opportunity to collaborate with the department to envision a revised curriculum that aligns with the college’s mission and strategic plan.
