JOB SUMMARY:  The primary function of the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) is to provide health services to students and employees at Gustavus Adolphus College. The APP functions independently and interdependently with peers, physicians, and other health professionals. The APP demonstrates competency in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of acute, chronic, and minor medical problems. The APP functions within the framework of established clinical privileges and protocols and scope of practice. There is emphasis on the prevention of illness, promotion of wellness, and development of health maintenance. 

*This is a full-time, exempt (salaried) position for 10 months per year*

HEALTH SERVICE ADVANCED PRACTICE PROVIDER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess and treat patients presenting for health care so they may return to an optimum state of health including acute care, mental health, travel health, sexual health and other primary care functions, with an understanding of the needs and challenges associated with a college age population.  Provider decision making must include the ability to assess suicidal patients and provide medication and ongoing care management.
  • Educate patients regarding their current health status so that they are aware of their condition(s) and share responsibility for their health care. This includes education about utilizing and understanding healthcare systems and increasing knowledge related to health insurance and pharmacy benefits.
  • Record pertinent information so that accurate medical/legal records are maintained.  Provider is responsible for coding and billing of all patient encounters.
  • Communicate with patients and others regarding health questions, concerns, and follow up and appropriate information is given in accordance with HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
  • Provide indirect care, through public health initiatives, to the broader Gustavus community.  Collaborate with local and state public health departments on a regular basis.
  • Facilitate and participate in staff, campus, and community education or development programs so that others have knowledge of current health information, issues, and practices.  Serve as a medical expert on campus in providing guidance and recommendations based on medical best practices.
  • Participate in professional activities specific to college health both to meet licensure requirements and to ensure quality care at the Health Service.  
  • Responsible for maintaining annual medical credentialing with the major insurance payers in Minnesota.
  • Participate in office, division and College meetings, programs, committees and assignments as requested.

Prerequisites

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS: Advanced Practice Provider (NP or PA).  Nurse practitioners are licensed as both a registered nurse (RN) and an advanced practice nurse (APRN) through the state of Minnesota.  They must also maintain certification nationally as a nurse practitioner through either ANCC or AANP. Physician Assistants are licensed by the MN board of medicine. They must hold a degree from an accredited PA program and maintain national certification by NCCPA.  Advanced Practice Providers must also maintain an active DEA license to prescribe medication.
