Position Details: Gustavus Adolphus College invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Education to begin September 1, 2022.

Department Information: The Elementary and Secondary Education Department at Gustavus Adolphus College prepares teacher candidates to be adaptive, culturally responsive and sustaining, service-oriented change agents and K-12 educators through its exceptional team of professors, small class sizes, and extensive field experiences locally and abroad (Global Educators Program). Teacher candidates’ preparation at Gustavus is enhanced by a strong liberal arts foundation that encourages breadth of knowledge, interdisciplinary and international perspectives, inquiry, and intellectual curiosity. Major/Essential Functions: Gustavus faculty teach, advise, conduct research, and serve the college and department. Currently, tenure-line Gustavus faculty have a 6-course equivalent teaching assignment. The successful candidate will in their first year receive a reduced assignment of 5 courses.

Primary responsibilities of this position will include teaching education courses related to critical pedagogy, culturally responsive and sustaining teaching, and social foundations of education, (i.e., Social Foundations, Human Relations and Career Orientation to Teaching), and potentially supervising student teachers and/or contributing to general education courses (e.g., First Term Seminar, a liberal arts capstone, January Term).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Education with emphasis in critical and culturally responsive/sustaining pedagogies, and/or social foundations of education with advanced preparation to be deemed a content expert; we will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status and who will complete their degree by September 30, 2022
  • A minimum of one year of prior experience working as an elementary, middle, secondary, or K-12 teacher
  • Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate teaching
  • Evidence of a commitment to undergraduate student advising
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to pedagogical methods that enable students across racial, ethnic, and socio-economic groups to reach their maximum potential

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching
  • Evidence of an emerging pattern of scholarship related to critical and culturally responsive/sustaining pedagogies, and/or social foundations of education
  • Evidence of an understanding of the importance of a liberal arts education and a vision for contributing to that education
