Course Description: Students in this course will participate and learn methods of teaching dance and gymnastics. The study of gymnastics will include tumbling, floor exercise, balance beam, vault, high bar, pummel horse, parallel and uneven parallel bars. Basic conditioning information will also be covered. The study of dance will include methods of teaching folk, square and social dances.

Course Objectives
Gymnastics
By the end of the semester each student will:
1. Participate in and record 4 cardiovascular exercises, 4 balance exercises, 12 flexibility exercises, and 7 strength exercises.
2. Participate, spot and analyze:
a. 10 tumbling skills
b. Vault progressions
c. 10 balance beam skills and 1 beginner routine to include a mount, 2beam passes and a dismount.
d. Floor exercise component parts and a simple floor exercise routine.
e. 10 horizontal bar skills and 1 routine.
f. 10 parallel bar skills and a routine.
Dance
By the end of the semester each student will:
3. Diagram, keyword, illustrate and perform the following social dance steps and rhythms.

Projects and Assignments:
1. Written Assignment: Explain how you calculate target heart rate and describe 4 aerobic, 4 balance, 12 flexibility and 7 strength exercises. (sport specific)#1(5%) due Nov17.
2. Experience active participation in aerobic and conditioning exercises covered in class.
3. Written Assignment: Experience plyometric training and pilates through participation. Define, describe and relate examples of use in school curruculum.#2(5%) due Oct 2.
4. Participate and master the 12 social dances. Skills test #1 (10%)
5. Participate in performance and spotting of tumbling and apparatus skills and routines. Skills test #2 (10%)
6. Written Assignment: Diagram and keyword social dance rhythm and step patterns. #3 (10%) Part 1 due Sept 18/ Part 2 due Oct 6
7. Teaching and Written Assignment: Discuss and define implementation of dance and gymnastics into elementary and secondary school curriculum. In groups of 2, teach one gymnastics and one dance lesson. Hand in lesson plans. #4(15%) due Dec 3
8. Participate and master all 12 folk dances covered in class.

Note: This is a participation course, please dress for activity everyday.
Attendance is important for success in this course.
You will be responsible for information covered in class everyday.
