Gustavus Summer Institute for Academic Success

Be Our Guest

The Summer Institute for Academic Success is an initiative designed to introduce campus resources for academic support to multilingual students. Any incoming student who speaks a language other than English at home some, most, or all of the time is eligible to attend. (We do, however, currently limit the number of attendees to 30, and may give preference to students who will be “first generation” college students.)

This four-and-a-half day event, scheduled immediately prior to First-Year Orientation, is free for invited students. The College covers the costs of early move-in to residence halls and of meals during the Institute.

About the Gustavus Summer Institute for Academic Success

Students who have provided language information on their Gustavus applications will likely receive an invitation to participate in SIAS, but you may also request to participate if you are eligible. SIAS is entirely optional. If you choose to attend, you will move into your residence hall on Sunday afternoon and take part in a series of sessions throughout the week. You’ll have the chance to participate in classroom discussion, read, write, and basically “warm up” your academic skills to transition into college. You will also meet some professors and administrators and learn about the many campus resources we have available to support your success as a multilingual student here. We want you to know about these resources sooner rather than later! You will stay on for First-Year Orientation, which starts midday on Friday.

SIAS is also an opportunity for you to meet classmates, become familiar with the Gustavus campus, and learn a bit about local history. In addition to classroom activities, we have planned a discussion with the director of the Diversity Center, a picnic with the incoming international students, a play about being multicultural in America, a cross-cultural simulation game, and a dance with the Peer Assistants.

If you have any questions about the Institute or about support for multilingual students at Gustavus, please contact Sarah Santos or the Academic Support Center (507-933-7027).

Welcome to Gustavus! We hope to meet you in SIAS!
