First Term Seminars
As part of their first semster course schedule, Curriculum I students entering Gustavus Adolphus College as first-year students enroll in one course designated FTS-1000: First Term Seminar. The FTS is a small, discussion-based course that introduces students to skills and habits central to the liberal arts: critical thinking, writing, speaking, and recognizing and exploring question of values.
Every fall semester, the MSPS staff collaborates with FTS professors to bring their students to the center to have a diversity education experience facilitated by Peer Educators and the MSPS staff. The sessions are held in the Dive and cover topics, including but not limited to, social identity markers, stereotype threat, definitions associated with diversity and inclusion, bias, race, gender, power, privilege and oppression.
