Your First Visit: What to Expect...

After making an appointment at the Counseling Center, the student will receive information forms. Students are asked to fill out and return these forms before the appointment, so that the counselor has an opportunity to review them prior to the meeting. During the first appointment, the student will discuss his or her concerns, and the counselor will begin an assessment of the student's needs and the ways in which the Counseling Center might be able to help.

Toward the end of the initial meeting, the counselor and student together will make a decision about what the best course of action will be. At times, the student's concerns are resolved at the end of this meeting, and no further assistance is needed. If the student does need further help, the counselor will make a referral to one of the services offered by the Counseling Center, to another campus office, or to an off-campus agency, depending on the student's unique circumstances and needs.
