Application Process

Counseling Center

Requirements and Expectations:

Candidates are expected to have basic interviewing and case conceptualization skills. Priority is given to those with training that is more extensive, or life experience that is relevant to working with a university student population. We especially encourage historically underrepresented students to apply. With our small staff, we are particularly looking for students who can interpersonally connect with both their clients and colleagues. Applicants may be exempt from the selection process if they are recent graduates of Gustavus, previous clients of the Gustavus Counseling Center, current or recent employees of Gustavus, and/or if concerns about other dual relationships arise.

Practicum students are required to be on site through the academic year. Our office is open 8:00 AM through 4:45 PM, Monday through Friday. Depending on the practicum student’s schedule, you may be on site for full or half days in order to reach the 20 hour per week minimum requirement. Practicum students will gradually build an individual therapy caseload and maintain a caseload of approximately 10-15 clients throughout the year, in addition to participating in above-noted group, outreach, and consultation activities.

Application process:

We welcome applications from both master’s and doctoral level students in counseling, marriage and family therapy, and psychology programs. Prospective applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, and three references to our Training Coordinator by February 4th, via email or at the address below:
