Meet Yukako Funaki
Why did you choose Gustavus?
My university in Japan (Kansai Gaidai) is a sister school with Gustavus, and Gustavus also has some interesting classes for communication studies.
What makes Gustavus unique for you?
Even though we are in a small town, there are always events going on to keep you busy. If you are interested in social justice or other cultures, there are many opportunities for you to participate and learn. It seems like such a small place to live, but you can always find something or someone new.
What has been your favorite academic experience?
Gender and Communication class changed my perspective about gender. I am so glad that I took this class because now I can see things that I didn't see before.
What activities have you been involved in at Gustavus that have been the most rewarding?
I helped to plan Asian Cuisine Night to present the food of our countries. As an international student, I think that it is our responsibility to represent our country and share our culture to spread more diversity at Gustavus. I loved being involved with all the cultural events.
How do you interact with your professors outside the classroom?
All the professors at Gustavus are very nice and they always want to help us. Whenever I have any questions about class or assignments, I talk to them. Some of my professors are interested in Japan, so we talk about my country, too.
What is your favorite food in the Marketplace?
I love their soup, carrot cake, apple crisp and curry and more! But I am sure you will miss food from your country! So, learn to cook some food and share it with your friends. It is the best way to share your culture and make some new friends :)
