Take an Assessment

Exploring your goals, interests, values, skills and abilities are all part of the first step in the career planning process. In addition to below assessments, find strategies to gain self-awareness here.

The Strong Interest Inventory compares your interests with those of people working in a broad range of occupations. It does not measure abilities or aptitudes. This information is a starting point in the process of making decisions about your major and career. We ask that you complete the online inventory at least two working days before your appointment – so that there is time to get the results.

  1. GO TO: bit.ly/gustavusstrong or Click Here to COMPLETE REGISTRATION or LOG IN if previously registered COMPLETE DEMOGRAPHIC SURVEY (if applicable) COMPLETE THE ASSESSMENT
  2. Select Strong Interest Inventory for your assessment. Click on Begin.
  3. Answer all 291 items. It should take you about 20-35 minutes.
  4. Work quickly and answer on the basis of your interests, not abilities. The inventory will be less effective if you answer more than 60 percent “like” or “dislike.”
  5. RECEIVING YOUR RESULTS: The results are extensive and require a counselor to interpret. Once you have completed the inventory online, please go on use Handshake to schedule an appointment, or call x7575 or stop by Career Development to make a one-hour appointment with a career development specialist. 

TruMotivate is especially designed to bring the insight of motivation to students during an important time in their lives. Using your own stories, the TruMotivate assessment report not only reveals top 5 motivations, but contains links to help you explore their career options. This report is a tool that can help you articulate and give meaning to something that isn’t always so easily seen or understood. The CliftonStrengths assessment measures the presence of talents in 34 general areas referred to as “themes.” Talents are ways in which we naturally think, feel, and behave as unique individuals, and they serve as the foundation of strengths development. Upon completing the CliftonStrengths assessment, you will receive your reports with information about your themes. You then have the opportunity to delve into those themes to discover your greatest talents. Gallup designed the assessment and accompanying reports to help you learn about and build upon your greatest talents to create strengths that will enhance all aspects of your life. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator is a tool to help you understand yourself, your own personal preferences and how you interact with others. MBTI results can be used to explore career choice, learning styles, problem solving, leadership, team building and networking. VIA Character Strengths Assessment: Takes about 15 minutes. Character Strengths are the positive parts of your personality that impact how you think, feel and behave. (Learn about VIA Character Strengths.) Scientists have identified 24 character strengths that you have the capacity to express. Taking the VIA Survey to discover your unique character strengths profile. Knowing and applying your highest character strengths is the key to you being your best self.

Values Card Sort: This is an online card sort to think about your values. It will prompt you to make a copy to have it be your very own values worksheet that you can edit and only viewable to you. 

Career Readiness Competencies : The National Association of Colleges and Employers identified competencies expected of all college graduates with the expectation that graduates are able to provide specific stories and examples as proof/evidence of their level of competency. Use Reflection on Career Readiness Competencies to record examples of personal career readiness competencies.
