Gustavus to host the 2013 Lindau Symposium featuring distinguished author, Dr. Arthur C. Brooks as the keynote speaker. Dr. Brooks will give a lecture titled, "Gross National Happiness" on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in Alumni Hall.

What makes Americans happy? What's the impact of work, giving, and family on happiness? What government policies and programs would bolster happiness?

Arthur C. Brooks is an expert on public policy and economics who has publishedextensively on social entrepreneurship and the connections between culture, politics and economic life. A behavioral economist by training, he has written books on the social value and economic impact of nonprofits and charitable giving.

Dr. Brooks has been the president of American Enterprise Institute since 2009. Previously, he was the Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government Policy at Syracuse University. He is the author of 10 books and hundreds of articles on topics ranging from the economics of the arts to military operations research. His most recent book is the New York Times bestseller "The Road to Freedom: How to Win the Fight for Free Enterprise e(Basic Books, 2012).

Other books include "The Battle e(Basic Books, May 2010), "Gross National Happiness e(Basic Books, 2008), "Social Entrepreneurship e(Prentice-Hall, 2008) and Who Really Cares (Basic Books, 2006). Before pursuing his work in public policy, Brooks spent 12 years as a professional French hornist with the City Orchestra of Barcelona and other ensembles.

His book, The Battle, looks at the new culture war facing America, a battle between free enterprise and social democracy. In 2008, Arthur released two books"Gross National Happiness, which explores the relationship between values and happiness and his book Social Entrepreneurship combines the methods of the entrepreneur with leading edge nonprofit and public management tools.

Arthur's first book offers surprising perspectives on the values and practices of conservatives and liberals in America. Who Really Cares: The Surprising Truth About Compassionate Conservatism proves with hard numbers that conservatives give far more to charity than liberals and explains why values make the difference.

He contributes regularly to TheWall Street Journal's editorial page.
