Description

The Department of Music presents faculty members Peter McGuire (violin), Sharon Mautner-Rodgers (cello), and Yumiko Oshima-Ryan (piano) in concert performing works by composer Maurice Ravel. The program features Ravel's suite for piano, Le Tombeau de Couperin, as well as his Piano Trio in A Minor.

The performance is free and open to the public.

About the Performers:

Peter McGuire was previously a member of the Minnesota Orchestra from 2003 to 2012. Peter joined the orchestra again in 2016 after serving as a second concertmaster with the Tonhalle Orchester-Zürich for three years.

McGuire began his career as first violinist in the Pioneer String Quartet and Des Moines Symphony, and has served as guest principal second violin with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Peter McGuire has performed as guest concertmaster with the Orchestre de la Suisse-Romande, Zürich Opera, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Seattle Symphony, Gürzenich Orchester-Cologne, and Richmond Symphony Orchestra. In addition, he has performed and recorded with the Berlin Philharmonic, SWR Radio-Sinfonieorchester Stuttgart, All-Star Orchestra, Chicago Symphony and Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

A frequent chamber musician and soloist, McGuire has been featured with the Minnesota Orchestra for the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and has performed with ensembles throughout the US, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein and Switzerland. A frequent adjudicator, he has served as adjunct faculty for Gustavus Adolphus College, and as clinician/coach for the Jugend-Sinfonie Orchester of Switzerland, and given masterclasses throughout the U.S. and Switzerland.

Sharon Mautner-Rodgers is a California native and has won numerous competitions both as a soloist and a member of the Trio Con Brio. Sharon has been a member of many professional orchestras, including the New World, Charleston, Naples, Memphis, Cedar Rapids, Quad Cities, Dubuque, Des Moines, Honolulu, Malaysian Philharmonic, and Wichita Symphonies. She has performed at The Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, Carnegie Recital Hall, The Teatro Cologn in South America, The Bastille Opera House in Paris, The Hollywood Bowl, and in Singapore.

Sharon has taught cello and coached chamber music at the Luzerne Music Center in New York, the Weathersfield Music Camp in Vermont, the Drake University Community School, Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and at Grace Christian School in Mankato, in addition to maintaining a private cello studio for over 20 years.

Locally, Sharon has performed with the La Crosse Symphony, the Rochester Symphony, Minneapolis Pops Orchestra, and as guest principal of the Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra in the Twin Cities.

Currently Sharon is cellist of the BEKESH piano trio, Principal of the Mankato Symphony, Associate Principal of the South Dakota Symphony, and a substitute cellist with the Minnesota Orchestra, in addition to maintaining private students of all ages and freelancing.

Dr. Yumiko Oshima-Ryan is an active performer of both solo and collaborative works. Her awards include first place in the Wurlitzer Collegiate Artist Competition and second place in the International Beethoven Piano Sonata Competition.

Since 1995 she has been incorporating contemporary Japanese piano works into her repertoire. She has performed these works nationally and internationally (Tokyo, Toronto, and San Juan) including world premieres of new works by Japanese composers.

She remains in demand as an adjudicator of piano competitions and as a workshop clinician. She has presented lecture-recitals and workshops throughout the US, including College Music Society national conventions (Quebec City, San Francisco, Miami, and Santa Fe). Her article "Role of Memorization in Piano Education" was published in Clavier, one of leading keyboard pedagogy magazines.

A native of Japan, Dr. Oshima-Ryan graduated from Toho Music Academy in Tokyo and earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati. Her piano teachers include Eunice Norton (a pupil of Arthur Schnabel), Menahem Pressler, Eugene Pridonoff, Richard Syracuse, Jerome Rose, and Satoko Tokumaru.
