We are all aware of the pivotal role China plays in the global economy but perhaps are less aware of the social and environmental implications of its rapid development over the last 20-30 years. I have worked in China for more than a decade and spent a year in Nanjing as a Chinese Academy of Sciences Senior Visiting Professorship. This presentation is a personal reflection on the effects that Chinese development has for both global environmental issues and China itself. I will provide a general overview of key aspects of Chinese development and its environmental impact and then illustrate briefly how our work on lakes in China (and elsewhere) can be used to understand the ecological change in remote ecosystems associated with this development.
