Year at Gustavus: Sophomore
What events are you in? Are you in both cross country and track and field?: I am in high jump and the 400. I’m just in Track and Field.
Where did you go to high school?: Hopkins High School
Where is your hometown?: Hopkins, MN
Tell me about your family (siblings, are any of your family members current/previous Gusties?): I’m an only child and no previous Gusties in the family.
Tell me about your experiences so far at Gustavus: I qualified for Nationals last year for Swimming, but didn’t get to go because of this COVID-19 pandemic. I was able to perform at a piano recital and Christmas in Christ Chapel last year which were both amazing experiences.
What volunteering or community service have you done in and/or out of college?: I used to volunteer at the Animal Humane Society in Golden Valley, MN. I have also been on many mission trips with my church back in my hometown.
What other extracurricular activities, clubs, or organizations are you a part of?: I take piano lessons. I am a part of Lucia Singers. I am on the swim team and the track team.
How have these activities changed your time at Gustavus?: They have gotten me a lot more involved with the Gustavus community. If I wasn’t involved in all of these extracurriculars, I wouldn’t have met a lot of the people I am now really good friends with.
Have you been a part of any movements that work for social justice or change? What are you passionate about?: I haven’t yet, but I plan on getting involved with a environmental justice movements in the near future.
Newspaper: If you would like press releases involving you sent to any hometown newspapers, please list them here: Sun Sailor newspaper
Tell me about any high school athletic and academic achievements or awards that you have earned: Back in high school, I earned the title of All Conference my junior and senior year, freshman and sophomore year I was given the title of Honorable mention for All Conference. These were for swimming. For track, I was able to qualify for sections in the 400 meter dash as a sophomore, but this was as far as I was able to go because I had to choose between swimming and track due to schoolwork becoming more present during my last two years of high school.
Tell me about your college academic and athletic achievements that you have earned . (Captain, All-American, all-conference, academic all-conference, etc, and include year): On the Swim Team during my first year (last year), I earned All-American status by qualifying for nationals in the 100 free. I earned All-Conference in all of my 7 events at the MIAC’s. I earned Academic All-American status by maintaining a GPA above a 3.5 and qualifying for nationals. I didn’t have the opportunity to compete with the track team as a freshman due to the Covid-19 pandemic and my time invested into the swim team.
Why did you choose Gustavus?: I chose Gustavus because of the Environmental Studies program and the welcoming Swim Team. Both of these I value to the highest degree. I also chose Gustavus because I was able to compete in Swimming and Track without having to choose one sport and to me, that’s a double win.
In your opinion what makes the Gustavus cross country/track and field programs different from other colleges?: From what I have experienced with the few high jump practices I have been able to participate in this year as a sophomore, I really love the teammates and the coaches are amazing. I hope to actually compete in the near future once my swimming season comes to an end. I also hope that I actually have a swim season this year.
