Why did you choose Gustavus?: I loved the team vibe during my overnight visit. I already knew gustavus had all the program options academically that I may want to pursue but the deciding factor for me was the overnight visit and just being so immersed and welcomed immediately into the crazy team I now proudly call my own. I loved how many smiles and hugs there were (again this is all pre-covid) and just the way they truly looked out for each other and the way the coaches were so interested in me as a PERSON as well as me as an athlete. I left that overnight never so sure of what I wanted to do. Less than two weeks later I committed, and I have never once regretted my decision. These have been the best years of my absolute life so far and I am forever grateful for GAC XC and T&F for putting on that overnight event that changed my life forever, and made me feel as though I'd found the perfect college home.
In your opinion what makes the Gustavus cross country/track and field programs different from other colleges?: The core of this program is on the family. We cannot effectively compete if we do not bond as a team and above all this program is focused on making sure that we as a community are bonded within our event groups and with our coaches, and with the larger team. It creates a sense of family so strong that people not even competing at conferences or regionals have been known to carpool (pre-covid)4+ hours to watch their teammates compete. The result of that is electric. You see your people, your family in the stands and hear familiar voices cheering you on as they do in practice and there's a whole section of the bleachers filled with athletes you may not know closely yelling your name. It is my favorite thing. I love my team, and as a result of that I dig deeper and fight harder in competition so I can lift the team as a whole higher.
