Gustavus And UW-Whitewater To Battle In Midwest Regional Final

With second round victories at the 2010 Women’s Tennis Midwest Regional held on Friday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn., UW-Whitewater and Gustavus have advanced to the championship match and will battle for a bid into the NCAA Team Finals. Gustavus defeated Luther 5-0 in the 12:00pm match, and UW-Whitewater defeated Wheaton 5-1 at 3:00pm. Gustavus and UW-Whitewater will play in the Region Championship on Saturday, May 15, at 12:00pm at the Brown Outdoor Tennis Complex.

The Gusties claimed all three doubles matches and then won the #3 and #5 singles matches to clinch the 5-0 win over #4 seed Luther. Gustavus improves to 32-10 overall, while Luther completes its season at 26-5.

In doubles play, Gustavus took a 1-0 lead when Marianne Barau and Megan Gaard defeated Katie Nichols and Alana Humpal 8-1 at the #2 position. Sierra Krebsbach and Sam Frank defeated Kelsie Allen and Brynne Zinnecker 8-3 at the #1 spot and then Ali O'Neal and Maria Bryan knocked off Katy Lindstrom and Fran Fairfield 8-5 at the #3 position.

In singles play, Ali O'Neal registered a 6-3, 6-2 win over Cassandra Chalhoub at the #5 position to extend the lead to 4-0 and then Marianne Barau picked up the decisive fifth point when she defeated Alana Humpal 6-2, 7-5 at the #2 position.

The Warhawks swept the singles competition before claiming the decision after registering wins at #1 and #4 singles. UW-Whitewater improved to 21-4 overall, while Wheaton finishes its season at 18-4.

In the doubles competition, Kalla Schaefer and Annie Smith defeated Elizabeth Worsowicz and Kayli Edwards 8-6 in #1 doubles. Then Kelly Rutkowski and Amy Siemon beat Jill Casserly and Kirsten Boyer 8-6 at #3 doubles, and Ingrid Stensvaag and Michelle Daciolas completed the doubles sweep defeating Lindsey Hallett and Sara Federschmidt 8-6 in #2 doubles.

In singles play, Schaefer defeated Worsowicz 6-3, 6-0 in #1 singles, giving UW-Whitewater a 4-0 advantage in the team score. Federschmidt defeated Siemon 6-3, 6-4 at #3 singles, making the score 4-1. UW-Whitewater got the decision when Annie Smith knocked off Hallett 6-2, 6-4 in #4 singles.

The winner of region final will advance to the NCAA Team Finals, which will be held at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia on May 25-27.

Luther And Wheaton Move On To Second Round Of NCAA Midwest Regional

Both Luther and Wheaton advanced to the second round of the 2010 NCAA Women's Tennis Midwest Regional with 5-0 victories on Thursday afternoon in St. Peter, Minn. Luther defeated St. Norbert 5-0 at 12:00pm, and Wheaton defeated Edgewood 5-0 in the second match of the day at 3:00pm.

Luther swept doubles doubles, getting wins from the pairs of Kelsie Allen and Brynne Zinnecker (8-4), Katie Nichols and Alana Humpal (8-4), and Katy Lindstrom and Fran Fairfield (8-0). In singles, Luther's Humpal defeated Allyson Yankle 6-1, 6-1, and Zinnecker beat Anna Reardon 6-0, 6-2 for the decision. Luther improves to 26-5 overall, while St. Norbert finishes the season at 8-8.

Wheaton swept the doubles competition as well, as the pairs of Elizabeth Worsowicz and Kayli Edwards won 8-2, Lindsey Hallett and Sara Federschmidt won 8-0, and Jill Casserly and Kirsten Boyer won 8-2. Wheaton won by decision after getting wins in singles from Casserly (6-0, 6-0) and Worsowicz (6-1, 6-0). Wheaton improves to 18-4 with the victory, while Edgewood finishes the season 12-14.

Tomorrow's second round draw will feature Luther taking on Gustavus at 12:00pm, and Wheaton going against UW-Whitewater at 3:00pm. Live stats and live Twitter updates will be available for both matches tomorrow afternoon.

Gustavus Selected To Host 2010 NCAA Midwest Regional

The Gustavus women’s tennis team has been selected to host one of eight NCAA Regional Tournaments this Thursday through Saturday, May 13-15, at the Brown Outdoor Tennis Complex in St. Peter, Minn.  Play will begin on Thursday, May 13, with first round matches beginning at 12:00pm and 3:00pm.  St. Norbert (Wis.) (8-7) will face Luther (Iowa) (25-5) at 12:00pm, and Wheaton (Ill.) (17-4) will take on Edgewood (Wis.) (11-5) at 3:00pm.  On Friday, May 8, Gustavus (20-4) will play the winner of the St. Norbert/Luther match in the first second round match at 12:00pm.  UW-Whitewater (Wis.) (20-4) will face the winner of the Wheaton/Edgewood match in the other second round match at 3:00pm.  The winners of Friday’s matches will play on Saturday, May 15, for the opportunity to advance to the NCAA Team Championship, which will be held May 25-30 at the Battleground Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Virginia.

In the event of rain, play will be moved to Gustavus’ Swanson Tennis Center. All matches contested outdoors will be played to completion. If weather forces the tournament indoors, matches will be played to decision.
