(St. Peter, Minn. - Sunday, May 12, 2002) – Gustavus Adolphus College defeated the University of St. Thomas 8-1 to win the Central Sub-Region Championship in St. Peter, Minn., on Sunday. The match was moved indoors to the Swanson Tennis Center due to cool weather. The Gusties, who improved to 20-5 with the win, will now advance to the NCAA Team Championship Finals to be held at Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Virginia, May 17-19.

The match began with Gustavus winning all three doubles points as Ellen Anderson defeated Sarah Lee and Julie Weiden, 8-1 at #1, Laura Beduhn and Kris Rosborough defeated Jodi Dmohoski and Kim Mueller, 8-4 at #2, and Allison Kramer and Kara Smiley defeated Becky Bell and Tiffany Weaver 8-0 at #3.

In singles play, the Gusties won the five of the six matches in convincing fashion. Laura Beduhn defeated Kim Mueller, 6-1, 6-2 at #1, followed by Ellen Anderson defeating Sarah Lee 6-3, 6-0 at #2, Kristin Donley defeated Julie Weiden 6-2, 6-1 at #4. Kris Rosborough cruised past Tiffany Weaver 6-0, 6-1 at #6, as did Allison Kramer, who defeated Becky Bell 6-2, 6-3 at #5. St. Thomas’s lone point came from a hard fought match by Jodi Dmohoski after she defeated Kara Smiley 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 at #3.

St. Thomas, which defeated Luther 7-2 on Saturday, finished its season with a record of 19-5.
